A STORY ABOUT “LIGHT CROWN”

Light Crown. It was a name that stirred something inside her, some deep well of hope and potential. She looked out at the stars, their gentle light sparkling in the darkness. They seemed so far away, yet she could feel their power, their promise.

She was just a common woman, but she knew she had a royal soul. She could see the problems and promise beyond the horizon. And she knew that she could make a difference.

With a determination born of courage and hope, she set off into the unknown future. There was much to be done, but with Light Crown guiding her steps, nothing would stand in her way!

It was a new kingdom, and they were free. The revolution had been won, and they were finally able to save the world. They had light crowns, and they were ready to take on anything.

THE ART THAT INSPIRED

This bronze sculpture is known as the “Woman from the French Colonies.” It was made by Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, who was a very famous sculptor in the second half of the 19th century. He was known for using effective colors, different materials, and even silvering and enameling techniques.

Cordier wrote about how the law from 1848 that abolished slavery in France and its colonies inspired him to create art. This is shown in his work, “Woman from the French Colonies”, where he put emphasis on natural beauty and grace.

HISTORY ABOUT THE ARTIST

The artist travelled extensively in Africa and became famous for their portraits of different ethnicities. They were inspired by the Orientalist movement in art, which is a style that features paintings and sculptures of people from the Middle East. The artist's work evolved to be very realistic and beautiful. In 1865, they wrote that "race as it is found in its reality" should be portrayed in art, instead of relying on stereotypes.

Cordier was born in Cambrai. In 1847, he met a former slave named Seïd Enkess who had become a model. This meeting determined the course of his career. His first success was a plaster bust of the Sudanese man, entitled “Saïd Abdullah from the Mayac Kingdom of Darfur.” This was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, the same year that slavery was abolished in all French colonies.
