Today I bring you again after some time the one that speaks of some hyperrealist artists another icon of this impressive genre for its similarity with the photographs or the reality in question. It's the moment we talk about Ralph Goings one of the greatest exponents and pioneers in photorealistic art a segment which although considered hyperrealist today at that time were the foundation for this great movement that endures to this day. Come with me to learn a little about the life of this illustrious painter.
Born on May 9, 1928, in Corning California - United States of North America, is one of the artists who lived the great depression of the 30s and the resurgence of a society with consumerist customs, this is the starting point of the painter in the early seventies where together with other artists from the photorealistic movement.
The main motifs he incorporates into the painting are sites frequented by Californians such as fast food sites, soda fountains and kitchen objects that were very common to find in these sites.
It is necessary to emphasize that this depression that arose in the United States as a result of a fall in the markets led the masses to revalue their way of life, by the time the market stabilized the citizens of this country found an economic boom with massive jobs in factories and the emergence of a standard of living a little removed from poverty providing greater comfort for the different places that at that time were so to speak fashionable, the cinema with its stars, places to share as soda fountains or restaurants, bars, discos and anything that made them forget their monotonous life.
It is precisely these elements that Ralph Goings impregnates in his painting, so he resorts to a technique of representing as realistically as possible what happens, for this, he resorted to the use of photography as a guide to represent what is real. The result was the birth of photorealism, the beginning of a movement that would end up consolidating itself as hyperrealism.
His first incursion in the world of the painting was in his day of secondary in which he had the opportunity to know the painting of Rembrandt, using part of his study of the light on the objects in his own pictures, in his first paintings he used what he had through hardware stores as industrial painting and the canvases he made them with bed sheets, this would be the beginning of his career in a very humble way but determined by the passion that arose in his youth what would take him to become one of the great painters of the XX century.
He studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Some of his classmates with whom he shared the same affinity for photorealism were Robert Bechtle and Richard Mclean who would serve as support for the discussions of how the movement should be directed.
Some of his closest inspirations come from artists like Wayne Thiebaud, Johannes Vermeer, Thomas Eakins, pop art would also play a crucial role in the emergence of photorealism, the thesis was that the images could not become real enough to show aspects of everyday life, which makes sense because until that time pop art was guided by other genres such as realism, impressionism only that adapted to the codes of consumption of the masses. So the work of this collective was to represent the closest thing to reality looking for fresh ideas they realized that photography was a good place to study and put into practice in painting.
The birth of photorealism meant the definitive rupture with abstract art, thus not only Ralph Goings felt identified with the rupture of abstract art also many more joined him and took the road, but some were also successful others desisted from continuing to paint in this style due to strong criticism.
