Camping, Hobies, & Lake Tahoe

in #adventure7 years ago

Hi steemians!

I'm back from my latest adventure to beautiful Lake Tahoe, CA.

It was my first time visiting this part of California and I was blown away by the radiant blue water of the lake. Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the U.S. (behind Crater Lake) reaching maximum depths of 1,645 ft, with an even more astonishing average depth of 1,000 ft. With crystal clear waters and radiant blue skies, my friends and I just had to get out on the lake!

We rented hobies which are similar to kayaks except they are pedal-powered, allowing your hands to be free. I prefer hobies on flat water as they require less effort to move and provide more stability, therefore we brought the dogs along with us.

With nearly 200 square miles of crystal clear water at our feet, we paddled around under the hot sun exploring the breathtaking views. Following my friend's hobie, who carried the Yeti cooler full of food and beer, we came across a secluded pebble shore. Swimming out to boulders, playing fetch with the dogs, and other typical water shenanigans commenced on this rocky shoreline.

After a long day out on the water we all returned to our campsite, which we had lucked out on earlier that morning. Without any reservations we were able to score a walk on campsite at Bayview Campground.

Directly across Bayview campground is Inspiration Point, a well known viewing point of Emerald Bay. Sitting 600 ft above the National Natural Landmark it is easy to see why it is such a famous stopping point.

At the opposing end of Bayview campground is a trailhead that leads to Cascade Falls or Desolation.

Desolation camping requires a permit as it is intense overnight backpacking into the wilderness. Cascade Falls on the other hand is a 2.8 mile round-trip hike that has spectacular views of a 200 ft waterfall flowing into Cascade Lake. A perfect mid morning hike right at the edge of our campground.

The trail is well maintained and easy to follow, and the whole hike is surrounded with gorgeous views.

After hiking in 3/4 of a mile the 200 ft waterfall became visible and with it our pace increased, eager to evade the heat in the icy cold runoff.

The end was reached! The runoff water rushed rapidly passed our feet, pushing with the force of a heavy winter snow pack, anxious for its fall into Cascade Lake.

Lake Tahoe sure did live up to the hype! I loved it so much in fact, that my partner and I decided to incorporate another camping trip there while on our road trip to Canada in a couple weeks. This time around we will have our mountain bikes and I am excited to explore more of the beautiful Lake Tahoe area, and of course share my adventures with you!
