bend with laughter,
shifting moods
like water becoming flame,
a cacophony of contradictions:
avant-garde, experimental,
an artist reshaping the frame.
that causes the worry—
desire’s sharp edges
always slicing the calm,
its whisper, a storm,
its promise, a phantom.
feet bruised on this unforgiving path.
“Enchant the world,” they said,
“Spin light from shadows,
give your dreams breath,”
though my hands tremble,
though the weight of wanting
sometimes still bows my back.
like a prism to the sun,
still scattering themselves
into a thousand colors.
Be well and make the most of this day.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.
These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Your poem reminded me that when I was a child, my grandmother used to tell me to stop looking so much to the sky, upwards, and to look down and put my feet on the ground. Human beings move because they aspire to move forward, to reach, to climb, because there is a sky and a horizon, but above all because there are dreams and desires. Sometimes desires upset us, degrade us, hurt us with their “sharp edges”. But there is also a certain joy in desiring, from there perhaps, the desire to keep the desire unsatisfied, to keep it latent. A nice Thursday, Eric. A strong embrace
You're right. Desire or "the want" is what keeps us exploring, perfecting, and evolving so it's not all bad. Thank you! I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week, Nancy.
Beautiful poem! Our lives are much like a prism, the different facets of ourself on display on any given day, only to give way to another version. I make myself dizzy some days lol
Thank you! That's an interesting way to look at it! As I was working on this I was thinking of my writing career but it could easily apply to day-to-day life in general. I love when people interpret these a little different than what I had in mind when I write them because it allows me to see all the different meanings in the poems.
I figured you were writing from your own professional life and looked at it from that viewpoint at first. When I reread it, it spoke differently. Poetry is art and as such, up for interpretation according to the viewer/reader, at least I think so.
Wow, what a beautiful, reflective, and inspiring piece. A joy to enjoy and reflect on with such a powerful use of metaphor!😍
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
So immensely profound! That is definitely my favorite part and likely a phrase I am going to carry with me for quite some time.
I appreciate that @bozz! I'm glad it resonated in that way. That was the very first line that came to mind when I started this. I built the entire poem around it.
Very cool!
Beautiful poetry about the world. The world is truly fascinating. Humans will never stop pursuing the world. Only death will stop man's desire to pursue the world. Have a nice day, Eric.
Thank you Eliana! Very true! I hope you enjoy the rest of your week.
Thanks!
Optimism, positive thinking and positive words are what makes our lives beautiful.
You're right. Our enjoyment of life (or vice versa) is 99% perception.
Very nice poem, very well written
Thanks!
