What about having a conversation with the student about their paper? It can be more about the conversation than the paper.

That is true, and that is exactly what I want. The problem is just time. We do not have infinite time to talk to every student, and doing such long hours in a week is draining. We need more lecturers as a first solution to this problem. But that is probably another can of worms.
Providing a more dialogical form of lectures might already help a great deal. The conversation with a student starts at the lectures. Maybe they will be more inclined to participate if they know it forms a part of their mark.
Another idea is to use peer-review to form a part of the mark. Not sure if students will be motivated to put in more effort, or they'll look to cheat the system.
Incidentally, on Hive we've been dealing with some of these issues (AI content, people cheating), so you might look here for inspiration. Or even use Hive in some way, if you are so inclined. Like, make a community for the students, they can comment on each other's work, things like that. If it would be a good idea to present their work publicly, of course. Can be a pretty good motivation to get better.
I am so sorry for only replying now. The last couple of months were quite hectic.
For sure. I really appreciate all of these. I have always tried to make my lectures more dialogical. But students don’t feel the need to read, so that is a problem. Making it part of their marks is a great idea, but the problem is we have big classes and cannot always use that model.
I like the idea of the peer review system for students, but not all of the lecturers like the idea and the higher ups also don’t like it at this stage. Maybe in the future they will be more open minded.
And that is a brilliant idea! As soon as I get my first permanent contract I will do this. At this stage my contracts do not give me too much freedom and some of my co-lecturers are slow to change. They are not always so open minded.
