This started out as funny to me but now it has been going on for far too long to be humorous anymore. About a month ago I slept "wrong" and woke up with a rather bad pain in my upper back. My arm was numb from the odd position I had managed to fall asleep in and i just figured it would go away after a little while.
Well here we are a month later and the problem is still there. I have gone to great lengths to try to stay off of that particular part of my back when sleeping and also try to enforce good posture in the rest of my day. I notice it most when I am sitting at a computer typing, which like most people is what I do for a job.

I think that almost all of us have pretty terrible computer posture and I have tried to correct this about myself. Unfortunately my current living arrangement doesn't really allow for me to have a comfortable chair with good back support unless I go out and buy one. Since I am not sure about how much longer I will be in this country that seems like a huge waste of money to me.
As far as the "sleeping wrong" aspect of my life is concerned I am reminded of Jim Gaffigan's standup comedy where he says "you ever hurt yourself from sleeping? That's a vigorous activity worthy of injury isn't it?"
It really doesn't make any sense but I guess this is just part of getting older. I have a bunch of pillows but I never really thought I would get to a point in my life where I needed a strategy in order to not have back issues from something like sleeping.
I've lived a relatively active life too so we cant' really blame this on lethargy.

So I guess you could say that I am curious if there are lots of other people out there that experience this phenomenon. There has to be a load of people out there with the same experience because I can't be doing it that wrong now can I?
I think I am going to start to get a bit worried about the future and the aches and pains that I have in store for me down the road. I don't like that this is happening but I guess this is part of being in your 40's. I've liked almost everything else that has happened up to this point but if there is more of this in the future for me, I am not happy about it!
What's the solution? Is there one?
Ouch!!! You made me remembered my own experience, it is not funny at all. There was this day I barely stood up from where I sat and when I finally did, I could feel this sharp pain in my lower waist region, it wasn't easy for me until I spoke to a friend who advised me to do some exercises which I did and it really helped me.
I think the only advice I can give to you is to try and walk more often and also change your routine if you can, it might not solve the problem completely but I'm positive it will help.
walking more often is probably a good idea for everyone in all walks of life... no pun intended.
Yeah it is. I hope you find a way around your sitting position.
I think it's just part of getting older. I messed up my back making the bed the other day. Pretty strenuous stuff right? I think it is good you are working out. I have found that the better my muscles are built, the easier it is to avoid those random injuries. As a last resort, I used to have a chiropractor that I enjoyed visiting. Not the cracking kind. This guy used pressure points and kinesiology to fix you. It had a very eastern medicine feel to it. Maybe acupuncture? I'm not sure how hard it is to find something like that in your part of Asia. Don't want to be lumping all the cultures together like most Americans 😃
I'm sure acupuncture and chiropractic services are available here. I just haven't really looked into it. last night I fell asleep on the sofa, which is barely big enough for me at 6 feet tall and I think I slept better than when I am on my king size bed with 5 pillows. The world doesn't make a lot of sense to me at times
Who knows! I messed up my back shoveling snow today, so now I have that to look forward to tomorrow yay! 😝
There is very little chance I am going to injure myself shoveling snow over here :)
You are probably right! Although, people in southern California probably would have said the same thing a week ago!
Having a bad mattress can be aback killer that can take you out very quickly. I know my chiropractor told me to sleep whilst keeping my spine straight so pillows can help as support. A bad chair is also the same and you can add a lumber support at the base of your back which should work.
yeah, my desk chair is BS and I really should have upgraded that ages ago. I think I never did so because of the fact that I never intended to be here for as long as I have been. This mistake will not be repeated.
It happened to me once because when I used to work sitting on a chair, I had to sit for about eight to ten hours continuously and it hurt a lot. So I had a pain in my back then I was checking the doctor and he said that sitting in one place continuously makes it so he said that if you have to work, you should lie down. Do it then you will not have such pain then I do in the same way. So you don't give me back pain.
I'll give that a try. I do spend a lot of time sitting in a chair staring at computer screens just like most people.
Yes, I have but few years back, My back started to get hurt massively due to my sitting posture. I went to the order and he told me about this, Now I try to sit straight as much as possible.
It's probably a good idea. I really should invest in a better chair for my desk since like most people, I spend a lot of time sitting at it with my hands on a keyboard.
Yes you'll feel comfortable and your productivity will also increased.
I am constantly faced with this problem when I sit at the table to read! Sometimes I sleep on the chair! As your picture shows
