THE SILENCE WE’D NEVER CHOSE

There are many times I’ve let my imagination run wild— sometimes after an event, after watching a movie, or even after reading a book that sparks a thought. Yes, one of those moments led me to wonder about a world without music. What would it feel like? How would people cope? Would we even manage to find a substitute for music? I can confidently say that imagined world isn’t so great. In fact, I can’t think of anything to truly replace music.

A few years back, I watched the animation “Trolls World Tour” not to give spoilers… At one point, the people lost their source of music, and there was no form of music, plunging them into silence and sadness. That moment struck me, and I couldn’t help but think: what would our world look like if we had no form of music? One thing is certain—the world would feel different. The energy and vibrancy of people and cities would slowly fade. Whenever I hear the phrase “Music is life” I can’t agree more.

Music awakens a certain kind of life and energy that words alone cannot express. Imagine walking into a party, a celebration, or any kind of event where there’s no music to liven up the atmosphere. No melodies complement the mood of the party, no rhythm to get people moving—just the murmurs of the crowd, the clinking of glasses, and some occasional laughs. The energy of such a scene would be so low. The atmosphere would feel dull and disconnected.

As a Nigerian, music is a huge part of our culture. We love partying, and weddings and ceremonies must be vibrant and filled with dancing. Music allows different cultures and tribes to showcase their traditions with unique sounds and rhythms. A party without music? That would feel like a strange kind of torture, lol.

But music isn’t just for parties and events—it’s a big part of our personal lives. I am a big lover of music, so I speak for myself when I say that music is therapeutic. I can’t Imagine spending my days in the quietness of my own head, unable to listen to some good music after a long, hectic day. Music lightens my mood, motivates me, and even helps me start tasks and chores, I’d otherwise feel too lazy to do. Without music, it feels like a part of me would be missing.

A world without music is hard to imagine because it’s incomplete. Music is a form of expression, a way to connect with others, and for some, a source of income. Many talents would go unseen, and voices would remain unheard. When we imagine the absence of music, that is when we can fully grasp the power of music we often overlook. Maybe, just maybe humans will find another substitute, but I certainly can’t think of any.
