Vampires, Curses, and Theft: A Deck Experiment

Way back in August, I hinted at a deck idea based on copying stuff and stealing stuff, and now it's time to show the bare bones of the deck I have in mind. See it on Moxfield here!

This is not at all ready to face a tournament scene. Obvious improvements include adding non-basic lands and other mana-fixing solutions, some mana rocks, counterspells, and so on. This is just a test to see if there's anything here worth improving.

My commander is Evelyn, the Covetous (alternate art), a 2/5 Vampire with flash and some fun tribal support nonsense. When she or any other vampire enters the battlefield, everyone exiles the top card from their draw piles, and I can play them. This gave me the idea for a wider theft theme for the rest of the deck.

The vast majority of the creatures in this deck are vampires to help trigger Evelyn's exile ability, and I can add more tribal support cards if I decide this is a good way to win by direct combat. As it is now, these creatures also have a +1/+1 counter subtheme as well, which should make them more viable for direct combat.

I have several cards which let me take control of creatures my opponents already control. I might need more, but this is less a main theme and more of a way to bypass threats on the table.

I also added a suite of enchantment cards which curse opponents or their creatures in various ways. Curses and vampires go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly, right?

All told, this deck is very much a casual kitchen-table deck. There's a theme, and there are ways to win while disrupting opponents, but I don't really have powerful combos or fast ramp or a variety of ways to interact with opponents. I'll want card draw, too, although Evelyn's access to exiled cards make up for that a lot.

Other ways to build Evelyn might include more of a mill theme to wipe out an opponent's library and make them deck out, although that's difficult in EDH. Her hybrid mana means both blue and red are entirely optional, and she could work well as a surprise mono-black commander. I'm intrigued by this card overall, and after a few games, I'll have a better idea which direction I want to go with her.

Wow. Great card. Would like to see what the deck it built around that.

Does this deck have any major weaknesses?

See the link at the end of the 1st paragraph.

Lots of weaknesses for now. It's just an experiment.
