Tote Bags are the new plastic bag & Trash bag
Hello... I am back and joining the fun ๐
her tote bag collection and found some really adorable ones! Some of her tote bag stories reminded me of the ones I had, as I also love collecting them while traveling. I ended up mentioning that, somehow, I have a mountain of Starbucks tote bags. I keep giving some away, yet somehow, I still ended up with more... and more... and endless tote bags.I was reading through @livinguktaiwan's post about
In some regions of Indonesia, the use of plastic bags has been phased out, especially in supermarkets, fast-food chains, and major franchises. Some regions are stricter than others, and I happen to live in one such place. There are still plastic bags, but mostly in traditional wet markets or small corner stores.
When you visit a convenience store in some region, they will not provide plastic bag, instead they will give you two options;
- Carrying the items without any bags
- Buying either their paperbag or totebag which is often a couple extra cents.
Plastic bags is also phased out in delivery system. Many big chains and franchises are charging extra for packaging that basically mean tote bags. You can not really opt-out of this because it's all included in the delivery. Since these kind of rules are strictly enforced, I have never seen a single plastic or paper bag from these places. Although, they still use paper bags only when you buy directly from the store.
As someone who used to order a couple of Starbucks every day, I accumulated two tote bags daily, excluding if I was also ordering from places like McDonald's or the Japanese fast-food chains. When you do the math, you can simply imagine that I was practically living among a mountain of tote bags before I knew it.
I still remember that I used a massive storage bin just filled with tote bags. Then, at some point, attempting to get rid of them, I used them as trash bags and gave them away, but I still ended up with more.
FYI, the totebags that you see above are just a fraction of what I currently have at home. These days we use the totebags when we give something to the neighbors. We also offer anyone these totebags just because it has Starbucks logo on them and people are more than happy to have them. But not only Starbucks, I also have one from Mcdonald and practically any fast food chain or coffee you can think of.
Other than those tote bags, I also love picking up one whenever I travel. As of lately, I have this tote bag I got from Thailand for 50-70 bath. I think that was a steal since it was just sold at a random local market over there at a fixed price. I don't think I could get it any lower.
These other two are the totebags I got from @fems.official a little while back. I am honestly obsessed with tote bags that can carry many things. I have a couple more high-end totebags that help me carry water bottles and necessities. Finding a tote bag that can fit many things is always nice.
I don't think I am alone in this; I also think these tote bags are not the answer to environmental problems. You see, just like in this article, Are Tote Bags Really Good for the Environment? they may be green in principle, but wait until someone like me ends up with a mountain of tote bags.

Interesting! I didn't know that tote bags are given away for "free" (you paid it for the price of other products) with these big chains... That's ridiculous as it's almost the same thing as giving a plastic bag, except that you pay for this more (pardon... it's "free" ๐)...
Anyway, at our place, in the supermarkets you can mostly buy paper bags, but it's great to see that more and more people are taking their OWN (tote) bags to the stores... I remember the time when I was a kid, my mom would always give me money and a bag before going to the store... :)
By the way, the bag with the girl and the camera are my favorite! You have a nice collection!!! Thanks for sharing!
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project! Check out our Reading Suggestions Posts!

hahaha yeah it's one of those hidden fees that actually robs you in daylight. These days I try to bring reusable bags everywhere just in case I am buying stuff from convenience store. I mean, I don't want to pay a bag that cost as much as two water bottle haha.
It's definitely nicer but I wish there was an alternative especially in our delivery system where they always hands out these bags without thinking the recycling process through. Like, sure I can recycle it but.... I ended up with lots of them and I have done everything I can to get rid of them and make use of them ๐คฃ
Thank you for checking out!
I love the first picture, with your kitty staring at us, trying to convince us, "totes aren't that bad!"
The last one cool and the photographer tote is great!
Yes, some stores we religiously take just some of our (massive) tote collection. But in other stores, where there is not a surcharge, I ask for the brown paper bag.
Upon unloading the stuff at home, the paper bags go straight to my compost pile!
Maybe tote bags are the answer, in my opinion. But I agree. It's very easy for a good idea to kind of lose sight of itself, get warped, and change into something bad.
Like with the transition from combustion to electric: I certainly don't think that if all cars are replaced by Teslas we'd simply be better off...
I have just a few personal totes that I collected from travels as well and I think they are pretty cool! (I got one in Korea!) But in total, yes we probably have way too many for the household..
I loved the idea for this article. It's something I never really gave much thought.
I could be an outlier in this whole tote bag thingy and while it's not at all bad, there has to be newer ways to recycle and these big corporation must think through it. I replied on the previous comment that perhaps a customer could return the tote bag, get points that can be collected and redeemed. The store could re-use the totebag in some fashion and it's a win-win situation.
This is our problem too๐คฃ and especially those convenience stores over here that keeps trying to sell us tote bags. Thank you for checking out๐
Forgot your tote at home? So easy to just buy another right there at the store because we need it haha!
Yes, while the tote is a better option, it is not a solution. It is just a band-aid over the problem
Crazy amount of Starbucks tote bags. ๐ตโ๐ซ My collection is super tiny and mini compared your one hahaha. Kitty with the elephant- the cutest combination ๐
Thanks to this weird policy of no plastic bag, I ended up with dozens of them and now, I am a tote bag hoader :D
Hold on!! The Starbucks tote bags are crazy, they're not helping the environment at all!! Why don't they collect them back at the store and recycle them for reuse? And anyway what's the point of putting a cup of coffee in a tote bag? It doesn't keep it warm nor prevent spillage? I'd expect more from a global chain to help the environment.
All that ranting aside, the camera one is a nice cool bag
The thing is we still have issues with recycling and little awareness about it. You actually have a great idea. Like, why not give points to those who return the totebags. Otherwise, if someone is like me, they'd ended up with mountain of totebags and it's not helping at all.
Actually, some of their totebag has this drawstring seal with extra zip ties. It helps keeping it secure during delivery esp around here all done with motorbike. It's actually day and night compared to the paperbag that are often kept open and the food and drinks are more exposed. So it's why a lot of companies even smaller ones use tote bag around here or use the thick and high quality plastic bags.
I got distracted by the kitten, tricolors are my weakness when it comes to cats haha โค๏ธ
Here there was a time when plastic bags were not allowed to take care of the environment, it lasted less than a baby owl feather hahaha but well, we use plastic bags for waste, for shopping, a cart ๐
Your bags are very nice ๐ Starbucks win!
I hope your place can change, honestly there's also biodegradable plastic bag that I actually support more than these tote bags ๐คฃ at least with them it can break down and I don't have to store them more than I should.
I would love to drink 2 Starbucks a day! I love those coffees and drinks.
You have some interesting recyclable bags, besides what you say, I wish it was being implemented in Latin America, the issue of plastic bags is damaging the ecosystem in an abrupt way. I hope this is implemented more like that over there. My favorite is the one from Thailand ๐คฉ.
By the way that Cat๐ is beautiful, very flirty and giggly posing for the photo.
hahaha drinking multiple starbucks in a day is honestly a bad idea. You can get diabetes and weight gain xD I would not recommend it at all.
The plastic bag is an issue but totebag is also an issue hehe. The cat don't want to let the totebag go hehe thanks for checking out!
What a beautiful collection of bags you have, I love the bag with the beautiful elephant
I hope that cloth bags will not be a problem for the environment in the future
Have a lovely dayHello lady @macchiata good day
Some cool totes youโve got! Itโs definitely a contemporary issue that we have lots and lots of totes hahaha we do as well! We have some special ones, maybe Iโll participate in the tote showcase here lol
Ohh post your special collections hehee I mean we'd love to see cool totes around
I have so many of those bags as well, not from the fancy places, but most of them from the convenience store which I always forget to bring the bag whenever I was shopping there, and ends up buying and collecting those bags. !LOLZ
Talk about convenience store, I have a lot of them too haha. It seems like I always buy except when I decided to just carry everythign I could hehe. These days whenever I go to hospital, it's like everyone is no longer carrying plastic bag around but those convience store bags :D

You are a proper hoarder! That's two posts in a week about collecting stuff. To be fair, there are so many of these nice bags sold cheaply or given away as promotional items in SE Asia.
However, this no excuse and if I ever see you post in the minimalist community again, I will sooooo downvote you ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Take care Mac and have a great week ๐
Now that I am home, it reminds me what a hoarder I and my family are like ๐คฃ this house won't classify as minimalist house with the amount of stuff we have. But yeah, SEA has awesome promotional bags and sometimes even when you buy clothes, they don't give you plastic bag but this tote bag that looks cute.
I am back to the house I tried to escaped in. We seem to be collecting stuff we don't need and it frustrating haha. I look forward to the downvote ๐คฃ but I can tell you as much, I might not post there except the occassional minimalist travel stuff
See you around Nathen and have a great week!
First and foremost: a meow for that cute kitten. Loved that picture.
And the tote bag I like the most is (guess what?) ๐ท
the camera one? It was such a bargain and great deal actually. It was like $5 and you get three of them hehe.
๐
The elephant tote bag is beautiful too. I like to use them a lot even though I don't have many.
It's great to hear that some regions in Indonesia are phasing out plastic bags.
It's a good way to reduce plastic waste.
Nice collection.
