Hello, Hivers!

Here is my entry for the Summer Fiction Challenge hosted by the Ink Well.

I would like to thank @raj808, @shanibeer, @stormlight24, @carolkean and @jayna for welcoming writers to this community, and helping them thrive in this field.

Dear Sophie,

I am writing to you from my balcony as the sun shines, lighting up the streets from where I can hear the sound of pedestrians talking and walking on the streets. As I drink my cup of coffee I smell the fresh-baked bread, which fills the air from the bakery downstairs.

Everything here is so authentic and unique. It reminds me of you.

I picture us strolling together, arm in arm on the Rue du Bœuf, and glancing at the colorful art galleries, coffee shops and restaurants.

You would have loved walking through the quiet and peaceful lanes of this old town, surrounded by ancient buildings, with cross alleys and narrow passageways that take you back to medieval times.

I still travel alone with my camera as my only companion. I am sending you some of the pictures that I took yesterday. I could witness the magnificence of the Saint Jean Cathedral which stands out in the heart of the town, and is surrounded by craft vendors, buskers, ice cream carts, and of course the tourists and visitors from everywhere.

It was beautiful. Though I must confess that age is having an effect on me. I'm not as energetic and enthusiastic as I was when I was your age. Sometimes I fail to see the charm of things. I guess something is missing.

I miss you.

I know I would see the magic again through your youthful curious eyes. I am certain that someday you will become a wonderful artist and your paintings will be on the walls of some of these art shops, or others in the world, reflecting the true spirit of God's creations.

I will take you to locations whose scenery will inspire you, and make up for the time we have lost. I am eager to see you graduating so we can start traveling the world together.

I'm leaving in a couple of hours to Fourvière Hill to visit the Basilica of Notre-Dame. I’m supposed to have the article ready for my editor this week. I’ll tell you all about it.

I carry your picture right next to my heart. I hope I will be back home soon.

Love you always,

Your father, Chris.

*PD: I've attached some pictures I took today. Hope you like them.

Querida Sophie,

Me recuerda a ti.

Me haces falta.

Llevo tu foto junto a mi corazón. Espero volver a casa pronto.

Te ama siempre,

Tu padre, Cris.

I loved this story. It shows that beautiful connection between father and daughter, and the love that can overcome the distance.
Thank you! I look forward to reading what comes next.
Good luck!

This is quite charming, @lacrucita. I like letters and diary entries as a format for storytelling. If you ever decide to do more with this story, or one like it, you might consider how to add some drama and a story arc. For example, a set of letters back and forth could tell the story of something that is happening between the parent and child, or in their family.

Beautiful piece of writing!

Thank you, @Jayna!

Yes. Actually, after I finished the letter I thought about writing another one from another location. But your idea of letters back and forth adding conflict to it would make it more interesting and meaningful.

How can I make a series here in Hive?

Thank you for your support and advice.
