IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT

Sabrina I love you always; you know that, right? Bernie says pulling her in for a hug, my sister would come around anytime she’s in town. Bernie says Sabrina’s furrowed brows and pursed lips say it all when she’s uneasy. You would like her. He gently tucks her hair behind her ears, reassuring her she would love his sister. That should be your least worry, as my sister is really accommodating. I am off to get groceries. The old chair led out a mournful creak as he stood up barely lifting his feet as usual; the floor disapproves of being constantly beaten by his slippers and reacts with a slurp-slurp sound; the loud echoes that come with shutting the door signified his disappearance. I should get to work, Sabrina whispered.

Being the only child, she wasn’t big on family; she loved just having to deal with the guy being supportive in a way that family was not involved. She also had some posttraumatic trauma due to her post-relationship, where she was seen as incompatible each time the sisters came around and the guys declared what judgment their family held, saying it was their tradition. She says a silent prayer, unsure if God heard but hoping this time turned out differently.

Sabrina was doing her final year, and she worked at a restaurant to give herself financial support as her parents were not standing well on their feet. Bernie was her senior colleague; they were good friends, but love happened. He had ticked all her boxes aside financially, but she held on to the small beginning and daily affirmations that things would fall into place as long as their love was resilient.

Sabrina had a very uncomplicated lifestyle; after work she either went home or went to meet her guy if need be; she was one of the few girls that shared the joyful screams at a winning team over the television screen; her obsession came from bonding with her dad; she spent most of her time with him than her mother; she was always jealous screaming girls homes; their residence is in the kitchen, not the parlor; they always replied by laughing profusely, which often seems to upset her mom every time.

Apart from family, Bernie was all she had; when it came to having female friends, it was futile; she felt she was cursed in her former life. Even though he was not financially stable, he was thoughtful; he never went out without getting the slightest things she desired; she mainly preferred junk. There was a time she fell terribly ill; he stayed on her bedside for the whole week, refusing food, water, or anything.

After most football nights of laughter and screams, they went out based on who’s team won for the nights and thereafter went on midnight strolls. He loves running up his fingers through her skin; it is lovely at home because it paves way for good romance, but outside only turns her on without going further. She loved the nights they chatted into the mornings, when they struggled over which TV series to watch but later chose her because she would fall asleep a few seconds to his beginning. Her relationship was almost perfect because thereafter she went on midnight strolls. Her relationship was almost perfect because there were disagreeable nights too.

Sabrina noticed a change in Bernie’s character since he conveyed the information about his sister’s arrival. The last midnight walks after watching sports, but he would leave before the end or never even showed. He would constantly apologize, saying she would make it up to her. Aside from Bernie’s behavior, something new was introduced in her list of problems. She noticed a small circle of people—about 4-5 of them—repeatedly showed up at her workplace. The first day they walked in, she felt they just stopped by for a meal, but the repeated appearance for days and hanging around for hours felt awkward; most times she got peer at for minutes.

She felt really uneasy. Telling Bernie he didn’t give his listening ears or comforting words either; maybe they just moved into the neighborhood and are still figuring out how to settle properly, and you just overthink there’s no big deal, Bernie said. Everyone loves a comfortable town to reside in.

One evening after Sabrina’s hectic day, the doorbell rang, signifying someone’s arrival. We are closed, she said, slowly lifting her face. contagious grin appeared on her as he got closer. They went in for a hug. I have missed you, he said. "Nath, your flirty nature never seems to depart from you, she replied. They spent the rest of the evening catching up with their lives, chatting with the laughter echoing through the wall. It's getting late. I should get going, Sabrina said. He offered to walk her down; strolling, she saw the same group of people at a corner; their persistent gaze increased her fear, and she pleaded with Nath to walk her home, which he did.

On arrival, Bernie's face wore a furious frown. He replied coldly at her greeting. She tries recalling if she disrespected him in any way, but not anyone she could remember. She was so tired to deal with that at the moment, she proceeds to take her bath and collapse on her bed, sleeping off.

Early the next day, she wakes up to the absence of Bernie. What has gotten him so rageful? She wondered; she calls him a couple of times, and he refuses to pick up. She felt a strange tingling of sadness deposited in her chest; he has never treated her this way.
She hurriedly dressed up for work; on her arrival, she saw Bernie with the suspicious group of people; she never had a deep gaze at the girl but did that day, and almost immediately she saw the striking resemblance between her and her boyfriend.

She storms angrily towards Bernie, who graps his hand aggressively outside. What is my offense? We have never had a fight this long. Can you tell me what I did? Why are you with the same group of people I was scared of? What is really going on, Bernie? Bernie screamed one last time, like he wasn’t listening. You cheated on me; her jaw dropped as she began to stutter, not able to comprehend the bomb dropped on her; I did what she asked with a little giggle; wow, Joker of the Year she said; my sister told me; so you felt confronting me about the truth is meaningless. The last guy I spoke with that wasn't you was my friend Nathaniel, and he showed up unannounced.

I was scared, and that was why he walked me home; confirming from me would have been a better way to get through this, now your with those same guys..

After several hours of heated argument, they made out their differences, and proper introductions were made.

The confrontation between Sabrina and Bernie was intense, and it felt realistic how miscommunication almost tore them apart. It was a relief when they finally worked through their misunderstanding and resolved things with properly.
