Happiness in the Desert

The gaze that guided her steps suddenly vanished. Darkness took over everything around her and for an instant, Rebeca felt like she was walking in the emptiness of loneliness. She stopped immediately and took a deep breath. She closed her eyes and for a moment, she doubted if she had already closed them. She thought very quickly, encouraging herself. She breathed slowly, filling her lungs to the maximum and exhaling very slowly, trying to increase her internal energies to face herself. She said to herself, «Calm down Rebecca, now you are going to open your eyes and they will continue to guide you on the path to salvation, calm down and trust». She took two more breaths of air, which she felt very fresh, filling her spirit and being with much strength. After a couple of minutes, he said to himself, «Open your eyes» and what he saw could not have been more disturbing.

Only darkness. There was nothing to see, because his eyes if he had them open at all, could see nothing but a deep and empty black, only lifeless darkness. He blinked several times and the result was the same, the darkness enveloped everything. He closed his eyes again and with his hands, rubbing his eyelids, he slapped his face while saying to himself: «Please, it works again». He hesitated for a moment to open his eyes and again, began to take deep breaths and repeat words of encouragement to himself. He opened his eyes and even the dark curtain was still covering his gaze.

Rebecca, still with her eyes open, thought frantically about what could be happening. She blinked constantly, hoping to recover her gaze, which, until a few moments ago, was guiding her along a desolate and arid path. She had already lost count of how long she had been walking aimlessly in that inhospitable desert. The thirst, which until the moment of going blind had been bothering her, had disappeared. When she reflected on that and whether she was really blind, she said to herself that maybe it was due to dehydration. She thought about the last thing she had seen and remembered it was just sand, lots of sand. The sun was already setting on the horizon, where she was headed, and she had assumed that perhaps walking at night would be more comfortable. She shuddered a little as she remembered what she had told herself, that at night she wouldn't be able to see anything. So, she sat down on the sand.

She crossed her legs to feel more comfortable, placed her hands on either side of her body, and, palms down, leaned back a little until she rested on the sand. She felt it warm and very fine and took some in her hands. He brought it close to his face, always blinking, waiting anxiously for his eyes to uncover and let him see how fine it was, because that's how he felt it. She let it fall between her fingers and imagined seeing the cascade of fine sand falling to the ground, where it would be lost among the endless grains that reigned there. She felt like an intruder in this arid environment and in her mind, she apologized for interrupting the eternal calm of this place. Without strength, she let herself fall completely face up, and thinking of her new reality, lost in the desert, thirsty, without water, and blind, she began to cry, disconsolate.

The heat made Rebecca a little uncomfortable and, still drowsy, she leaned her body to continue immersed in the dreams that had taken her to another reality. After a few brief seconds, she remembered exactly where she was and what had happened until she fell asleep. She became aware that she was lying on the sand, which was still cold from the passing of the night. She wanted to open her eyes and felt very afraid of what would happen next. Then she noticed something. There was clarity in her eyes. She moved her head to be sure of what she felt and noticed a slight fluctuation in what she perceived as clarity through her eyes. She startled and sat back down on the sand. Rebecca clearly felt, at that moment, that she was afraid to open her eyes and see, without any doubt, that she was blind. But, she noticed a faint variation in her perception, which told her it was different from the previous dark black. She turned her head and checked that minimal hope that everything would return to normal.

He implored deep inside himself, with great faith, he prayed for everything to go back to the way it was before. He took a deep breath and opened his eyes. And there it was again. The immense desert and the endless dunes, with their arid and desolate color, appeared majestically before her. Overcome with happiness and joy, Rebecca jumped up and shouted with all her might a «YES!». that was heard throughout the dry environment. Without even thinking about it, she started running on the sand, in search of the exit that was now clear and precise in her eyes. Running with the sun on her back, Rebecca became, at that moment, the happiest woman in the universe.

Greetings, my dear friends of Hive Blockchain. A new week to create unique stories in the @theinkwell community. The #72 edition of The Ink Well Prompt brings us Guide as the main word to include in our stories. And this time, they have proposed as a skill challenge, Establishing a Hook to grab our readers and get them interested in our writing. I'm not sure if my story meets these requirements, but I hope I've lived up to the challenge. The details, conditions and rules for participating in this cool initiative, are in the link I left at the beginning of this paragraph.

You do indeed meet the challenge. That is a great first sentence.

The gaze that guided her steps suddenly vanished

You suggest a lot with it. First of all, she is blind, it seems. Then the sentence suggests she might be lost. So readers have two areas of interest before they read another word: Where/why is she lost, and why is she blind.

You certainly use the prompt well. So, great job on both prompt and skill challenge. Also, although our character may be blind, we are not. You let us see through your vivid descriptions. Well done.

Excellent writing Ramon.
How are you getting on today?

Loved this! I felt like it could be read on a number of levels, both literal and metaphorical. The references to salvation, faith, and prayer were not lost on me and I could relate very much both to Rebecca's sadness and fear as well as her pure joy as she lost her sight, lost her way and then regained it through Faith and prayer. Beautifully told story, Ramon.

I found your story through Dreemport.
