'The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch' is hilariously silly

It has been a while since I really paid attention to the shows from History. I recall the channel way in the past would air plenty, almost an obsessive number, of World War 2 related documentaries. Of which based on reality and others really grasping at strings to conclude the most insane conspiracy theories imaginable. But these were harmless. If not quite fun in a very silly way. Where one could shut off their brain and consume utter nonsense that could provide a little comfort and wonder to the world beyond what we know. Fascinating deep conspiracy theories surrounding technological capabilities. Mythical creatures perhaps not so mythical. Strange coincidences within the past that allow for a vast sum of questions to arise, each leading to more questions and never really answers. I like this, honestly. As mentioned it does make the world seem a bit more fun than it is, where man's deepest curiosities are covered, even if the conclusion does tend to be, well, lackluster due to a lack of evidence.

Growing up, I watched a lot of shows like these. I loved deep fantasy. Zombie films were on repeat. I loved shows and films around witches, mythical creatures and extraterrestrial beings; the paranormal and the somewhat normal. Questions that asked, well, what if? This fascination I had back then was met with a fascination in history itself. Having obsessively studied both Ancient Greece and Egypt. Finding myself captivated by cultures deeply rooted within stories. Ones of triumph, failure, and Gods each with their own agendas and purposes. To me, these ideas made reality a bit more fun. Secretly loving the idea that just maybe something might later be revealed to us all that was lost. A sign that perhaps there was something else out there. This curiosity has never really left me, though I no longer surround myself with such material. The truth is, while I don't believe in any of these things, I so desperately want to be proven wrong about them.

Feeling this sudden itch and nostalgia, I found myself roaming through the programming created by the more modern History. Curious as to what they were now up to, if anything given the time that had passed. Somewhat expecting to discover that it had gone under and was no longer producing things. Though to my surprise it appears to still be very much flourishing; so much so that I saw that everyone's favourite crack pipe show that is Ancient Aliens was still airing. Though I had seen online over the months discussion of the show The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch; my curiosity got the best of me, and I found myself checking it out, with little else to do at the time. Not sure what to expect, but having seen references to the location in the US, I went on in.

While I definitely want to refrain from writing anything that may be considered overly negative, I can only say that The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch was hilariously silly. To the point where I found myself later checking out a recent episode of Ancient Aliens to compare it to, only to find that it was incredibly similar in the ways it attempted to bridge together some sort of story and resort to every possible excuse to assume something beyond of the norm had unfolded. Purely void of facts and evidence, and riddled with insanity that ultimately made me enjoy the fact that it did exist in such a climate. The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch is supposedly an investigative look over the land of a ranch located in the US, weirdly surrounding by vast conspiracy theories over supposed strange events that had taken place frequently over the years. Ranging from strange beings shredding up barns in the night, to livestock being found dead in large numbers in the morning. Though the show takes things an insane step beyond and tries its best to find as many weird events to investigate as possible. Comparisons to the ranch having been near US tested nuclear blasts, to potential murders on the land. Even to strange UFOs flying over.

All of these things were completely baseless, of course. But to me the icing on it all was the show's attempts to take it all seriously. Frequent office calls with the ranch's owner in a serious manner, to which the owner is acting cryptic and vague regarding certain events and what the team can do on the land. Almost as if to give off a hint that the team should explore and that maybe they'd find something. Though in reality it just shows a desperate attempt to pull out some atmosphere and supposed mystery to the land. That said, what really made the show so funny to me, was looking up the ranch owner online only to see he had intentionally purchased the land knowing it had prior rumours, and then publicising them to the highest possible degree in efforts to profit from merchandise and various other events and ventures surrounding the ranch. Merely contributing to the alleged rumours purely for profit, of course!

Seeing this only made the show more silly to me. That it tried to imply so many strange things over the many individual episodes, of which were around 40 minutes in length. Where ultimately nothing is ever concluded or really discovered. Similar pulling at strings efforts to Ancient Aliens. Is there an alien force manipulating the energy levels around the ranch? Maybe. Do we have any evidence? Of course not! Did we suggest this question in the first place in effort to plant the idea into your head? Yes!

The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch is like watching propaganda for the gullible. For those who want to believe these things and are likely to believe them before they even presented to them. I hated it, to the point where I stopped watching it after a few episodes. Somehow there are numerous seasons of this show, but I am again not surprised given the ranch's owner aims to market the ranch as a victim of otherworldly forces, driving up interest for profit via merchandise, but also increased interest in the land itself to later sell on. But with that all said, I am actually glad that it exists. I am glad to see the History channel still doing its things all these years later, and I assume still pulling some good enough numbers to keep the lights on. And while these shows are utterly stupid, I am happy that someone out there is still playing into the very human nature of curiosity. The want to believe in something extra. Because after all, we are driven by such curiosity. Forever fearing what might be out of our control, but also longing to discover it. There aren't many doing this anymore in the same manner. Connecting reality to the fictional. If not fueling creative minds with its wacky stories clearly stretched to the limit.

For that reason, I praise it. Should you watch it, however? Well, I would argue that it is a colossal waste of time. Unless you're seeking something with some mystery that isn't purely some Hollywood production. Something that at least attempts to seem more of a documentary series. As I said, though: I had to drop it. I just couldn't go as beyond as they'd like me to.
