One of the most beautiful aspects of this region of the south coast of Africa is the option for water sports. Known as the Garden Route, this prime holiday resort hosts an idyllic coastline for surfing, as well as an adjoining lagoon for canoeing.

I was fortunate enough to make it to the lagoon shore line at low tide, as you can see in these photos today. It's possible to actually access the lagoon for the adjoining Keurbooms beach. This section of the lagoon is flanked by prime holiday resort rental and private accommodation where locals can moor their boats and access the water whenever they choose.

If you love canoeing then this is the place for a leisurely paddle on the calm and relatively shallow lagoon which is linked upstream to two rivers that feed it, and downstream to the Indian ocean via the lagoon mouth.

I just love this zone. You can paddle all the way up river for several kilometres or you can paddle right out to sea via the mouth if you're feeling brave and the conditions are good.

You can make your canoe adventure really easy by timing it with the incoming and outgoing tides. Catch the incoming tide to carry you upstream and the outgoing tide to carry you back downstream afterwards. This little tip really helps. I guess that's the secret to life - harness the trend and the flow.

This idyllic Keurbooms lagoon and beach is in the treasure holiday resort of Plettenberg Bay on the south coast of Africa. Be sure to add it to your travel itinerary. You'll be happy you did. The water awaits you.

This rank amongst my favourite places in SA. I am planning to go to Wilderness on Monday, and could perhaps find my way to Keurbooms, I have never done the trip up river yet, I believe there are also some small motorised boats to do the trip.

Hey that's awesome Rynow. What good news. Yes there is a little boat club, to the right off the N2 just past the town of Plett; right on the Keurboomsrivier. You launch there and pass under the N2 bridge and upstream in the most epic nature setting, in a narrow ravine inaccessible via any other means other than the river. There are little beaches dotted along the river where you can stop and have a picnic. Leopards have been spotted there even just last year.
