Hello adventurous friends! Today I visited a small, rather remote village in the north of Portugal. When we entered, we could see a small sign that said: "welcome to Freixo, a city within a city" and you were like... what? That curiosity led me to park my car and go for a walk to understand how it is possible that a city exists within another city, and of course I immediately understood that "Freixo" is a village that has archaeological remains of a Roman city, and the story does not end here...π°π©π»βπ¦―

Hola amigos aventureros! hoy visite una pequena aldea bastante remota en el norte de Portugal que cuando entramos alcanzamos a leer un pequeno letrero que dice: "bienvenidos a Freixo una ciudad dentro de otra ciudad" y tu quedas.... que??... Esa curiosidad me llevo aparcar mi coche y hacer una caminata para entender como es posible que exista una ciudad dentro de otra ciudad, y claro comprendi inmediatamente que "Freixo" es una villa que tiene restos arqueologicos de una ciudad Roman, y la historia no solo acaba aqui...π§π©

I want to admit that this is the first time I have visited such a small place with so much interesting information to discover. At first glance, the village is very small with less than fifty houses and you cannot see many people walking along its paths and alleys. It is a lost and forgotten place for tourists and its main economic contribution is "science" of course and agriculture. Before visiting the streets, I decided to visit a swing that is on the outskirts in a forest.π°π©π»βπ¦―
Quiero reconocer que es primera vez que visito un lugar tan pequeno y con tanta informacion interesante para descubrir, a simple vista la aldea es muy pequena con menos de cincuenta casas y no alcanzas a ver mucha gente caminando entre sus caminos y callejones un lugar perdido y olvidado para los turistas y cuyo principal aporte economico es la "ciencia" por supuesto y la agricultura, antes de visitar las calles decidi visitar un columpio que esta a las afueras en un bosque.π³π

I loved the beginning of the walk because the forest is humid and cool, quite quiet and you only hear the birds singing, normally this is something that is difficult to get if you are in the city like me! The swing has the name "galada" because it is the same name of the valley where it is built, I want to tell you that this is on the outskirts of "freixo" it does not belong to the same village.β°οΈπ§
Me encanto el comienzo de la caminata ya que el bosque es humedo y fresco, bastante silencioso y solo escuchas las aves cantando, normalmente esto es algo que es dificil de conseguir si estas en la ciudad como yo! el columpio tiene el nombre "galada" porque es el mismo nombre del valle donde esta construido, quiero decirte que esto es a las afueras de "freixo" no pertenece a la misma aldea.π

To better understand the history of the village we would have to review the archaeological remains that date back to prehistory, exactly in the ancient Neolithic, since that era "Freixo" and its surroundings had settlements of people who settled permanently due to the abundant resources on this side of the country, a team of archaeologists found in this area remains of structures that belonged to "primitive" houses where civilization later built, and this is why "Freixo" is a city with another city inside, interesting no?π§β°οΈ
Para entender mejor la historia de la aldea tendriamos que revisar los restos arqueologicos que datan de la prehistoria, exactamente en el neolitico antiguo, ya desde esa era "Freixo" y sus alrededores tenian asentamientos de personas que se establecieron de forma permanente debido a los recursos abundantes de este lado del pais, un equipo de arqueologos consiguieron en este campo restos de estructuras que pertenecian a casas "primitivas" donde posteriormente la civilizacion construyo, y es por esto que "Freixo" es una ciudad con otra ciudad adentro, interesante no?π©π»βπ¦―π¨π»βπ«π¨π»βπ
Later the Romans arrived in this area and those less advanced civilizations with a very different culture still existed. The Roman civilization arrived in Portugal a few years after the Christian era between the 1st and 2nd centuries, then they settled in Freixo and lived with the locals. This mixture can be seen in the village as we see Roman houses and houses from the other civilization.π§πΈ
Posteriormente los Romanos llegaron a esta zona y aun existian esas civilizaciones menos avanzadas y con una cultura muy diferente, la civilizacion Romana llego a Portugal pocos anos de la era Cristiana entre el I-II, luego se asentaron en Freixo y convivieron con los locales, esta mezcla se observa en la aldea ya que vemos casas de los Romanos y casas de la otra civilizacion. πΈ

During the Roman era, Freixo grew a lot both as a city and as an economy. The Romans used these lands to extract resources such as marble and granite, as well as to take advantage of the areas to grow different cereals that would then be distributed throughout the Portuguese territory. Only fishing in the area was not used since there are no rivers nearby. We see that different social classes lived in "Freixo" since the archaeological remains found were clothes that could only be worn by rich people.π©π»βπ¦―β°οΈπ§
En la epoca de los Romanos Freixo crecio mucho en cuanto a ciudad como economia, los Romanos usaron estas tierras para extraer recursos como marmol y granito, asi como aprovechar las areas para cultivar diferentes cereales que luego serian distribuidos hacia todo el territorio Portugues. Unicamente la pesca en la zona no fue utilizada ya que no hay rios cerca, vemos que habitaron diferentes clases sociales en "Freixo" ya que los restos arqueologicos encontraros eran prendas que solo podian ser vestidas por personas ricas.π°π©π

We begin our tour through the streets of "Freixo" which are characteristic of the medieval era as they have a granite rock road as well as many of the architectures, we see a mix of baroque, gothic and more! The church we see here is called: "igreja santa maria do freixo"; it was built in the 16th century and then underwent some modifications until it became what we see today.π§π°
Comenzamos nuestro recorrido por las calles de "Freixo" las cuales son caracteristicas de la era medieval ya que poseen una calzada de rocas de granito al igual que muchas de las arquitecturas, vemos una mezcla de barroco, goticio y mas! la iglesia que vemos aqui se llama: "igreja santa maria do freixo"; fue construida en el siglo XVI y sufrio luego algunas modificaciones hasta llegar a ser lo que vemos actualmente.π©π»βπ¦―π©
In the era of the Portuguese conquests in the 11th century, the Arabs also inhabited this entire region, but unlike the Romans, they did not leave much evidence; it is even believed that they were able to take advantage of the Roman structures and build on top of them. When Henry the Conqueror decided to recover the lands of Portugal, he arrived in Freixo and at that point in history the village belonged to the Portuguese and the Moors were expelled.π°π§
en la era de las conquistas Portuguesas en el siglo XI los arabes tambien habitaron toda esta region pero a diferencia de los Romanos no dejaron una basta evidencia, hasta se cree que pudieron aprovechar las estructuras de los romanos y construir encima de ellas, cuando Henrique el Conquistador decide recuperar las tierras de Portugal llega a Freixo y en ese punto de la historia la aldea pertenece a los Portugueses y se expulsan los Moros.β°οΈπ¨π»βπ«
Excellent initiative by the municipal chamber to prevent people who have houses in the village from being able to build and modify their structure. For this purpose, the same municipal chamber financed the recovery of several houses so that they can serve as tourist spaces and people who visit the village can make a history of what these streets were like more than 500 years ago. It is worth noting that in the 14th century the village was completely closed off with a wall that can be seen in some houses today.π§πΈ
Excelente iniciativa de la camara municipal de evitar que las personas que tienen casas en la aldea puedan construir y modificiar la estructura de ellas, para esto la misma camara municipal financio la recuperacion de varias casas con el fin que sirvan como espacio turisticos y las personas que visitan la aldea puedan hacer una historia de como eran estas calles hace mas de 500 anos, cabe resaltar que en el XIV la aldea se cerro totalmente con una muralla que se observa en algunas casas hoy en dia.πΈ
My visit to the village of "Freixo" was quite interesting. I learned a lot about the culture of the northern part of the country. It is my first experience in a place that shows Roman, prehistoric and medieval archaeology at the same time. There are few villages in Europe as well preserved as this one. There are restaurants and hotels nearby if you want to spend a vacation of several days.π§π°
Mi visita en la aldea de "Freixo" fue bastante interesante aprendi mucho sobre la cultura de la zona norte del pais, es mi primera experiencia en un lugar que muestre una arqueologia romana, prehistorica y medieval al mismo tiempo, son pocas las aldeas de europa tan bien conservada como esta, hay restaurantes y hoteles cerca por si quieres pasar unas vacaciones de varios dias.ππ¨π»βπ
