Listen, it's not real. None of them are!

You may listen to this as you read the story below.

•••

It all began on the night of October 31st, 1996 — Halloween's night if you will. At the time, I was 13 and was going trick-or treating with my friends around the neighborhood. Of course, my parents had a few rules for us like "don't talk to strangers" and "don't wear black", but the most important one of them all was: "do not accept anything that isn't candy from anyone!"

Unfortunately, as it is often with children, I and my friends went on to break just about every rule they told us! And in what transpired as a result of a truth or dare game, I was dared by my friends, to go trick or treating at old Mrs Agatha's manor.

You see, just by the very end of the neighborhood, was an old looking manor owned by the neighborhood's very own loon: Old Mrs Agatha or as we as kids liked to call her back then, Crazy old Mrs A. At the time, Mrs Agatha was known around the neighborhood for being irrationally delusional. Ha! She would always go around preaching about how earth had been taking over by these mysterious celestial beings she kept calling the Atheans. Eventually, after numerous complaints had been lodged against her by the other neighbors, Mrs Agatha was kicked to the curve by officials and driven to the very end of the neighborhood, where she remained in solitude — undisturbed — for many years. Well atleast, that was until Halloween came that night.

So there I was, standing outside the front door of the scary looking manor, my friends chittering behind me as I hesitantly knocked on the door. And with every moment my knuckles tapped on that wooden door, I felt an ominous feeling overcoming me. My heart rate increased and I gulped loudly while waiting for an answer. Then, after about ten minutes, I heard shuffling sounds coming from within the manor before, at length, the doors opened

Chilled but all the more surprise to see nothing but darkness welcoming me when the doors slowly creaked open, I scarcely breathed out a low:

"Hello?.... Is anyone home?..."

For a moment there was complete silence and it felt as though someone was cautiously watching me from deep within the darkness, carefully observing.

"Errrrrrr.... good...." a voice suddenly sounded from within the darkness. It sounded like that of an old lady. "You're one of the real ones..."

"Uh... Trick or treat?..." I said again nervously.

"But of course..." the voice replied in a very dry and crooked tone.

"Here, this is for you..." the voice then said as a hand stretched out of the darkness, and reached for my open candy sack.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I think you're mistaken madam. This is isn't candy." I muttered nervously.

"Yes..." the voice replied. "I am aware."

"Okay..." I said. "But i'm not sure i can accept this" I said politely.

"Oh, but ever why?" the voice asked.

"Because... because my father said I shouldn't accept anything that isn't candy from anyone this night!" I exclaimed.

"Ohh... but this is much better than any candy you could receive this night! It is truth!"
the voice kept urging me.

"But... but my father..." I implored. But she soon caught me off.

"No buts!" she said. "You must trust me. Just eat three of these beans before bed tonight, and you will see what I mean."

"Uh..." I muttered.

"Fear not my child. Just do as I have said and all will be clear. Believe me, you will not regret it." the voice urged me once more. "Now go on back to your friends and watch as the night will pass."

Upon returning to my ever so eager friends whom had been waiting outside the gate, I was met with several questions.

"So?... How'd it go?" they all asked eagerly.

"Uh... it was kinda weird. She didn't give me any candy just... some ground coffee ."

"Argh... what a weird hag! I knew she was crazy!" one of the guys scuffed. "Just throw it in the garbage. It's useless". he implored.

However, even as we continued trick-or treating that night, I felt myself unable to forget all that the old lady had told me back then and so, with thought, I decided to keep the beans and give them a try later.

Later that night, at around 10:30pm when everyone else in the house had gone to bed, I grabbed the bag which I had hidden under my bed, and took three of the beans, eating them silently as the old lady had instructed. Honestly, I didn't really feel anything unusual after eating them, apart from the fact that they tasted really bitter of course And so, shortly after that, I went peacefully to bed.

Morning soon came, and I was awaken by mother's voice.

"Honeeyyy... Wake up! You've been sleeping all day!"

"Huh?... Uh mom, give me another hour! Jeez, I had a long night!" I grumbled, pulling a blanket over my head. But it wasn't until my mom gently pulled the sheets from my face, did I get a peek at her face.

"Aaaaahhhhhh Alien!!!!" I screamed.

"What? What??? What's wrong honey" she implored. But all I could see was this light-blue, celestial looking creature, standing beside my bed.

"Ah! Don't touch me!" I exclaimed as I ran downstairs to the living room, looking for my father.

"Dad! Dad! There's something in my..." I yelled but I was cut short by yet another alien creature, with the voice of my father!

"Huh? What's wrong son?..."

"Ahhhhh!!!" I screamed again, pushing my father aside and running out the front door.

"Help! Help!..." I screamed but as soon as I saw what was outside, I was left speechless: nearly everyone on the street - my friends, my neighbors - ALL OF THEM... they were all... aliens.

THANKS FOR READING AND KEEP EXPLORING!

We put the 1000 word limit on the STB's initiative because we get so many entries that we couldn't possibly read them all if people post really long stories. 1200+ words is quite a bit beyond that limit so unfortunately, I can't read your entry.

Oh... I see. The story is actually 1000 words in total, aside from the author and other footer notes.

What if I just take those down? They're not as important to the story anyway.

I just go by the PeakD word count. I generally give some leeway for footers if it's clear that I can skip those parts. You can edit and Milly might read it if it's done before she gets to it? But me,

LoL. I like you.

Thanks for the pointers. I've edited out the footer and author notes. I guess they weren't as clear as I had hoped👀

Lmao that's exactly it 🤣

Actually, it's also partly because yesterday (or the day before) I told someone I wouldn't read their post because it had 1100 + words. I like to keep it fair and this week I'm not being as generous

Ah man you had me hooked! I want the next 1000 words!

Hehe... That'll be nice huh?

I'll take a well deserved hiatus and see what I can come with.

Edit: Actually scratch that, I tend to get lazy so... There's that!

Woah so has the crazy old hag been saying the truth? Are there aliens in disguise living amongst us? Why the hell would you eat the ground coffee?! So many questions.
Oh nah this was too good I need a part 2!

Yes, I do believe it might be an alien invasion or what not. Either that, or the poor little kid just had a little bit too much coffee last night. If you know what I mean? :)

Why the hell would you eat the ground coffee?

Why?... Cause like most horror/paranormal movie characters, he's stupidly inquisitive.

Beginning to think it might not be “coffee” after all..
Either way I really enjoyed reading this and hope to get a part two. (inserts puppy eyes)

Beginning to think it might not be “coffee” after all..

LoL, if its what I think you mean, that would be hella funny!! XD

Oh God no! Not the puppy eyes!!!

Honestly, if this story wasn't for the contest - the #STB of course — I would've gone ahead with a sequel. Sorry :(

I think you’re thinking what I’m thinking then lol.

Welp I’m gonna pretend I didn’t see those tiny words and still expect a part two. untitled.gif

I saw the communication between you and leaky, and I later saw your message to the community's account with this explanation:Hey @zeraton

Uh... Minus the author/ other footer notes, the story is exactly 1000 words So, hope I make the cut that way regardless!

I think Leaky's direct response made it clear, right?

  • There's a high volume of posts
  • The challenge is time-sensitive
  • There are other time limits involved

... So approving the entries that fulfill all the guidelines need to be done in a jiffy, to afford adequate time to read entries and do other necessary thorough checks.

In other words, we ain't got the whole fucking day to sit around going back and forth asking authors to correct their shit.

Don't make me Spell Your beans-7.gif

On this occasion we will accept your story since you left the note, for a great effort, and because your story was so fucking good:)

LMAO 😂... I hear ya loud and clear now Ma'am!

But really, from all you and leaky have said, i absolutely get it! Makes sense that way. I'll be sure to note that for my future entries.

On this occasion we will accept your story since you left the note, for a great effort, and because your story was so fucking good:)

Yayyyyyy!!!! Let's goooo!!! Thanks Milly!🤍 Also, appreciate the compliment :)

So much for knowing the truth!

What a story..who would have thought that crazy old Mrs Agatha was right after all...the people arnt who they seem and it took some ground coffee to find out...
Beautifully written story... totally enjoyable ❤️

Gee thanks chinco!

story..who would have thought that crazy old Mrs Agatha was right after all..

Really, I actually thought the plot was already kind of predictable. Maybe a eve a little cliche lol. But thank you! So glad you enjoyed the story!

Loved the story. I thought he would get a beanstalk in his stomach or a giant peach or shrink. I never expected aliens everywhere. That's kind of how I feel coming to work Monday morning.

You're an alien.

You're an alien!

You're an alien?

Everyone's an alien.

Ha! Funny, that was my intial idea for the plot! However, after a little trial and error, I realized if the story took that direction, there would be WAY too many things to cover, thereby exceeding the contest's 1000 word limit.

Plus, I thought it would've been a tad bit cliche :)

And lol😂, if that's how you really went into work then, I guess my job is done then :)

Sheesh Zeraton, you sure know how to give a gal the willies! Damn fine story, the music you picked was ON POINT! My skin began to crawl with creepies, full of anticipation as I sank down into your tale.

I think I'm glad the boy disregarded his friends telling him to spill the beans (hehe, but like into the garbage)... I mean, she SAID he wouldn't regret it- and sometimes the coolest things in life start with some panic... so I'm just going to believe the truth the beans gave him set the boy free, and he did something cool with that knowledge. You definitely got a nice set up for a part two here though I will say... 😉

Thanks for sharing this awesome story with us 😁💚

Grindy!!!! Always a pleasure to have you here💛. And why thank you, giving people the creeps is my specialty :) So glad you enjoyed it!

Music was real good yeah?

True though, eating the beans sort of gave him a little sense of clarity. Heck! Now he knows that freaking aliens live amongst him!

You definitely got a nice set up for a part two here though I will say...

Hehe... Some stories are better left without sequels👀... I am very lazy :)

Hahaha oh my goddess, such build up, and such a quick ending!!! Hilarious. You have such a way of creating suspense and intrigue and making me laugh at the same time. Who knew coffee beans could be a red pill/blue pill gateway into seeing reality behind the illusionary where we are NOT aliens ....

and such a quick ending

The word count made me do it darling! The word count...😪 I should've been more cautious tbh

Oh... but coffee is that and much more! Why don't you try it yourself, take exactly 3 coffee beans before bed time today, and all will be revealed by tomorrow morning. Jamie is not human °_°
