I found a strange new mushroom I haven't seen before. The cap was quite interesting with these rough brown scales. Here is a new mushroom find for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

Older versions of it seem to become lighter and it has a sort of conical cap.

It has rained here and some of them only halfway bloomed before drying out. Here you can see it has white gills and a fairly rough stem stock.

Here is a really good specimen for identification. You can see the light brown rough cap, a fiberous stem ring and the rough stock. It also lacks a large bulbous stem base so it is not an amanita.

Here is their pinning form. At first glance they remind me of ink caps.

For reference here are some actual ink caps, very similar indeed, but ink caps start turning black and don't have white gills.

In the end the best identification I could find was the deadly dapperling for this mushroom. It's Latin name is Lepiota brunneoincarnata and its contains a toxic called alpha-amanitin that causes liver damage. A few people die of these every year as the dapperling can look like many other edible mushrooms.

The only other mushroom I was able to find was some dried out ramaria. I'm hoping fall rains will bring out crown tipped coral so I can harvest some for pasta.

In the meantime the forest is looking quite nice in the milder weather from fall. Hopefully the fall mushrooms will be bountiful this year.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

it's always a kick to find a new species

I also learned there are quite a few different types of dapperlings that grow around here. I always thought they were just some kind of amanita but as it turns out there are loads of different Lepiotas around here.

Great finds… even just the few.
Let’s hope the fall mushrooms will be plentiful 😁
Enjoy your day 👋🏻

Its the doldrums of Indian summer for mushrooms. Just a bit too hot and dry to bring out the fall mushrooms. By the end of the month hopefully a bit variety will appear.

Yes, too hot and dry isn't good.
Hope it changes soon. Autumn is here… arrived back home last night. It’s raining since 10 this morning. The garden was very dry… luckily it does get water now.
Have a nice day 👋🏻😊

It is called freckled dapperling and it is toxic, Great find. 😊

That makes sense as a common name. This is the first time I've seen it in the forest.

the deadly dapperling

Thats exactly why I only forage easy ID mushrooms. Beyond the shadow of doubt...

the forest is looking quite nice in the milder weather

Things are really greening up around here too. Plus some nice dry weather. Lovely time of the year 🙂

Definitely gotta keep your wits about you when foraging. The only mushroom poisoning I ever got was from Agarikon powder I bought from Host Defense. I guess I'm allergic to it, caused instant heartburn and vomiting.
