Stained skies and detachment

in Outdoors and morelast year

Over the last few weeks I've been working hard; that's not to say I don't usually work hard, I do, it's just that with my budget year at work coming to a close in a couple months I'm putting in a herculean effort to ensure I am happy with the result at the end of the reporting period. Hard work pays off.

I can be a little intense at times, and by a little I mean, a lot, and when I'm focused on something I want to achieve is one of the times it comes out. That means I've had to learn to switch off, recharge, re-set or re-centre. No matter how I describe it, doing it is essential for my forward progression.

It was with that in mind I decided to go hunting tonight, more for the hike in nature away from everyone and everything.

20230316_202121~2.jpg

I headed out before the sun set and got some hunting and hiking done and then sat around on the crest of a hill to watch the sunset. You can see me below doing that exact thing. Of course, I also scanned for targets, and found some, but when the sun dipped low it had my full attention. As it slipped away, so did the pent up stresses and pressure from work. I felt good.

I did some more hunting and managed to find some more targets but, if I'm honest, I wasn't really into it. I was there to relax, clear my mind and to get some fresh air, so I wandered about not concerned overmuch with scanning for targets. It allowed me to truly listen to nature, and to feel part of it.

I left around 21:30, well after dark, and as I was locking up the gate behind me heard some noises in the scrub not too far from where I stood. I closed the gate (it wouldn't do to lose several beef cattle - I'd have to pay for them), and sought out the noise.

20230316_201546~2.jpg

As it turns out it was a little kangaroo moving about in the scrub and he wasn't the least bit concerned that I was there; he must have known I'd packed away my rifle. I followed him up the road a way and he then hopped over the fence line and into the property which is when I took the image above. You can see him in the spotlight at the centre of the image but you may need to zoom a little.

I went back to my four wheel drive and headed off home. Although it was actually dark, there was a little colour in the sky and I wanted to see if I could capture it so I stopped and grabbed the image you see at the start of this post. I love the way the silhouette of the trees looks against the colour-stained night sky and if you look carefully you might see a star or two.

Tonight I went with the express desire to relax a little and put some distance between work and myself; it worked. A strenuous hike in the countryside is always going to help me detach. I came home, ate a late dinner, showered and now it's bed time. I feel tired, but settled and ready to push into Friday and then the weekend.

I hope you folks have had a good week and plan to finish it strong. Let me know in the comments how your week has rolled out if you like.

Sort:

I too love the silhouette of the trees against the fading or brightening sky. In that first picture, is that Venus just above the tree line? I don't know how all of that breaks down in the Southern hemisphere - star alignment is confusing enough in my own sky. Anyway, that is the location of Venus at dusk here.

What a cute little hopper. My hoppers are much smaller here, being bunny rabbits.

Things that made my day today:

  1. A comment from you.
  2. Umm...
  3. Erm...
  4. Hmm...

OK, just one thing.

Last night was really cool. I'm always focused on the task at hand, a wise course of action when firearms are involved, but last night my main task was to chill out and that's what happened. Sure, shooting happened too, but that was secondary. It was a really cool night out.

Venus is visible at this time of year until about 9pm so yes, I'm pretty sure that was Venus. Even if it wasn't, I like the idea of it being Venus so I'm calling it Venus. That's the most times I've written Venus in one sentence, or even two. (Pretty sure it was Venus for real.)

I hope you are well up your way, and all those little hoppers too. I saw several last night, (hares and rabbits), all hopping around having fun. All were left intact in case you're wondering.

I just finished reading this survivalist book that my dad gave me, written by an Argentinian that went through the 2001 economic collapse, and I thought of you. Seemed like a topic you would enjoy. Funny, my children's martial arts instructor has a heavy South American accent, and is similarly interesting in such things, so while I read the book I imagined there was a combination of narrators - one from Peru and one from Australia.

Venus isn't a word one throws around every day. Feels sort of good to say it. Maybe you should say it ten times fast. No, too easy. Try Mississippi instead. Venus and Jupiter were very close together recently, at dusk. Venus, in all her beauty really put big old Jupiter to shame.

Things that made my day today

How sweet. Ditto.

All were left intact in case you're wondering

Oh good, it would be terrible to dis-intact a hopper.

Yes, I like my survivalist stuff, probably because I know what can happen if one doesn't know a thing or two when out and about in the boonies. Fortunately, I'm boonie qualified and yes, there's a badge. I wear it sometimes. Now and then. Always! It's good to hear you read that book, what did you think of it?

Venus is a legit planet; they say woman are from there, right? There's a book about it, so it must be true. I like Venus and Venusy things.

So...Ditto on your ditto and ditto on the dis-intactified hoppers.

So the book was more about surviving in society, rather than outdoors related stuff. It had a section of self-defense, weapons, home security, etc. It was pretty interesting. It gave me a lot of ideas for amping up home security. It also sold me on carrying a knife. Another point it made was in regard to country living vs. city. I've always been inclined toward the country - the farther out the better - although we live toward the edge of a moderate-sized town/small city (however you want to call that.) He made some good points about what happened to people living out in the country with the huge increase in violent crime. Home invasions were a lot easier to accomplish out where there are no neighbors to notice anything and no police presence. So it made me a little happier about where we live. Although I do have the country call to me still.

Venus is just so much prettier than Mars.

Ah ok, I see. Still something valid I'd say as most of us live in urban environments and I'm glad you've got something out of it.

There's many use-cases for carrying a knife of some sorry, I'm never without one...I just did a post about what's in the centre console of my four wheel drive and yep, a knife and marlin spike among the other items. And if you're thinking about increasing home-security then that's a great thing also.

I understand what you're saying about the violent crime in rural areas through being less populated, although country-folk are different and whilst there's bad elements, generally (here) it's ok. I'd still rather less people around but maybe that's because I've spent years developing certain capabilities and am comfortable with them.

Either way Gin, I'm glad you're thinking about being more prepared. #proudofyou #goyougoodthing

And yeah, Venus 💜

I'm glad you've got something out of it.

Yes, it was a good read. I'm reading about permaculture now, along with a biography on the Duchess of Devonshire, a yoga magazine, and I think two more. Not enough time, too many good things started :)

Yeah, I think overall the country is pretty safe out here too. That was more in reference to extreme social collapse, which hopefully will not be a problem for us ever. Fingers crossed.

Hope you are doing well.

Peaceful. The beauty of nature, bringing the end of day to a close and colorful sunsets.

You are living the life when your work is done. Good luck pushing to your deadline with numbers that make you happy.

Baby roo! Sweet!!

It was a nice way to end the day and I'll be doing something similar tonight, just at the beach instead of in the hills. I hope there's some colour in the sky; I think nature is good for it.

I hope you have a great weekend Swigles.

I have never seen a purplish tinge for sunset as ours are mostly an orangey haze which can get rather boring. I am sure ours is mainly the mine dust reflecting creating the color but your sunsets are way different. Yes it is always good to take a break from the norm to clear the mind and some alone time in the bush would do that. Lets hope you have a great day tomorrow and are ready for the weekend.

You're the second to say that. Here, we get sunsets of all sorts of colours depending on what's in the air, as you say. Dust, smog, smoke, moisture etc. I'm glad of it as sunsets are beautiful.

I took this at Semaphore not too far from my house. You may have seen it in a post I did a few weeks ago...if not, you're seeing it now. Just one of the many different looking sunsets we have.

Also, I have a feeling today is going to be a great day...and not just because the company buy lunch every Friday.

In my opinion, to get away from work and in general from everyday things, there's nothing better than immersing yourself in nature; as I can see every time from your photos then in your part there are really fantastic places to surround yourself with nature and relax a bit!

All beautiful photos, but the first one is special I loved the colors of that photo.

Australia is a vast country with many amazing places and I'm fortunate to have seen much of it...although a person would need a long, long time to see it all. This little slice of Australia is a good place for me to go when I want some solitude and I'm grateful to have access. Being on this land without permission may result in being shot, so I'm glad to have permission. 😁

Eh eh they are beautiful landscapes but the shooting seems like an exaggerated price to pay, better to ask for all the permits!😉

Indeed, no hike is worth getting shot for.

Woowww I didn't know this community existed! I love nature so much.
For a moment I remembered my grandfather who loved to hunt, what beautiful memories.
I loved both the pictures and your adventures in that moment of relaxation.
Regards @galenkp!!!✨

Yeah, I started this community a long while ago for somewhere to post my outdoorsy stuff. I'm pretty strict on the content here, to ensure it's on-topic, but a few post now and then.

Well, I love it, I will read all the rules without hesitation.

Ahh, violet sunset, my favorite. It's just so beautiful, such scenes are quite rare in these parts of the world.

It was pretty nice and the colour surprised me a little, it's not something we see a lot. The conditions must have been right for it though, and I'm glad I was there.

Oh, then you're lucky. My days under a violet lit sky are the best, simply because it brings me a lot of joy and cause it's a rare sight over here.

Even the theme of my room at night is a mix of violet and purple, lit up with different types of lights haha.

I like all the colours in sunsets...I guess I find sunsets really peaceful in general. I'll chase a few this weekend for sure. I hope you have a good weekend.

I guess I find sunsets really peaceful in general

Oh yess, I have to agree with that, especially when the views by the beach

I'll chase a few this weekend for sure

I'll be on look out. ☀️

I hope you have a good weekend.

Already there haha. Some of my relatives are here and we're catching up today. Our weekends are on Friday and Saturday. Fridays are special in our country, because of our Friday Prayers in the afternoon, known as Jummah.

I hope you're doing good too, take it easy this weekend and keep your loved ones close. Cheers 🥃

Galen managed to see a star in the cover photo and the kangaroo, I know them only in the zoo, I have never seen them free and like you.

What a beauty of sky and scenery, thank you for those postcards at night in Adelaide

It's great that you manage to relax, and calm down to rest, the quality of your sleep depends on that; because it directly influences the performance you have day to day.

A very good night to you 🌺

We ride kangaroo's around sort of like other countries do with bicycles; it's a bit of a bumpy ride and hanging on can be difficult, but once you get the knack, it's easy, especially with a saddle.

Ok, that's not true at all, we don't use saddles.

Ok, we don't ride kangaroo's either, mostly.

I had a nice night out and about in the countryside. I like being there at night,it sounds and feels different.

It's the first time I'm seeing a violet sunset and it's hella beautiful!

Last night's sunset painted the sky orange. Tonight it was violet...tomorrow...who knows?

🥹 whatt.. Wow! There's more color? Amazing!

So far I've only seen blue and orange..

It's a little more exciting than just blue and orange here in Australia.

Aww 🥹 then australia is a beautiful place! 💖

One of the most beautiful places in the world and an amazing place to be born and in which to live.

Wish to be reborn in my next life in australia 😆

Taking a mid-week break even for one night is valuable for a quick recharge when feeling the stress being busy all the time.

Good luck getting to the goal!

I take long walks around the home watching everything that moves to take regular breaks in the day.

@tipu curate

It's truly amazing what a hike can do to my mood, I always feel energised, but more importantly content, happy and settled. It's a nice feeling.

Stunning lighting right at the end of the day, capturing the kangaroo with your sight light, lucky devil got away when you were relaxed...., must have brought a smile to your face!

Hike, night under the stars to decompress, energizing before next half of the week.

That kangaroo was only a baby really and even should I have had my rifle I'd not have shot it. He didn't seem to mind me getting up close and right before I took the photo I was only about five metres from it. Maybe one day I'll see him again through the scope.

Not great distance then a baby fleeing in the night, do farmers still sell/utilize the meat and skins?

The kangaroo's? No, where I shoot they are left where they lay. There are government tags issued though and professional roo shooters take the carcases to market.

Food for the dingo sure there not many around in your region...

Professional culling here meat is distributed to the local rural tribes, private farms a different matter they work on licensing to the best of my knowledge.

Great little post. It took me to that very place you were at for just a moment.

I wish I could have stayed. Feet crossed looking over the landscape at the setting sun. But no, I snapped back to reality. With tired eyes and bed time looming here also. 🙄😴

You been truckin' too hard?

Been doing 4-5 day turnarounds. So not really too much. But factor in the fact that I only enjoy it for the first hour or two of the day then yes... Waaaaay to much. 😉

Lol...Way too much sounds like...well, way too much. Have the weekend off.

Back out Saturday afternoon. I am back on the Food Lion grocery store layover loads. $500 to sit 24 hours with replacement refrigeration units for the installers to unload as needed.

In this intentionally destroyed economy and soon to be wrecked country. I am glad to still have freight. Record numbers of owner opts and small companies are failing.

KrazzyTrukkin' till the wheels fall off literally. Not how I planned on going out bro. Not my style at all...

Enjoy your weekend also. 😎😻👩

The trucking situation here is no better man.

Only a couple weeks ago, Scott's Refrigerated Transport went under. Australia's largest reefer transport co. Why? National super arket chains beating them down on rare and refusing to pay fuel. So...$500 million of refrigerated product sits in cold storage with no way to move it and no ability for the company to keep the warehouses cold.

Greed is strong in humans.
