I picked up this 1946 BT Washington Silver Half Dollar, along with its 1946-D twin from a dealer a few years ago. I am only picturing the 1946 as they are both in the same condition and look exactly the same. The only difference is the mint mark is on the reverse under the cabin for the Denver minted one.
They were minted from 1946-1951. They are made of 90% silver and weigh approximately 12.5 grams. You can look up more on the coin here at Numista.
Booker T. Washington was a former slave who became a leading African American the 19th century in the United States. He founded the what is now known as Tuskegee University in 1881. He even advised Presidents of the United States. (Source: History Channel)
Nice find!! The previous owner did a good job at keeping it intact right away! Lots f what I find these days are pretty old looking. Although silver is silver and I like em all! Thanks for sharing 😁
Yes, for most older stuff I am not always concerned about the bling. I do like to be able to make out some of the details. Especially lettering, dates, and mint marks.
Yeah for sure, don't want it all erased and illegible, the age is the whole charm of the coin. I have an American coin that will be 100 yrs old next year, yes I want to see dates too!!
I find around here they over charge for the older coins tho as collectible. I'm more of the closer to spot price type Although I do have a pretty good collection of RCM coins when I used to find them at a decent price but they are all 80's and up.
That's a beautiful coin, Joe. The story is interesting too. Great to learn it through your post.
