Losing my fear of my first overlock machine (ESP/ENG)

Hello #needleworkmonday friends, after a week of pause here, I want to talk to you today about my process to lose the fear of my first overlock sewing machine. Just as you read it I had to lose my fear of this sewing machine, because the truth is quite intimidating at first.

Hola amigos de #needleworkmonday luego de una semana de pausa por aquí, quiero hablarles hoy de como ha sido mi proceso para perderle el miedo a mi primera maquina de coser overlock. Tal como lo leen he tenido que perderle el miedo a esta maquina de coser, pues la verdad al principio resulta bastante intimidante.

I remember that when I was little my mother had an overlock machine that she used quite often, and I remember that for my mother it was a machine of great care and quite complicated, so much was the complexity of the sewing machine, that she constantly took it to a specialized technician for maintenance and especially when she had doubts about the sewing machine.

Recuerdo que cuando era pequeña mi mamá tenía una maquina overlock que utilizaba con bastante frecuencia, y recuerdo que para mi mamá era una maquina de mucho cuidado y bastante complicada, tanto era la complejidad de la maquina de coser, que constantemente la llevaba con un técnico especializado para sus mantenimientos y en especial, cuando tenia dudas respecto a la maquina de coser.

When I started in this adventure of sewing and knitting, I was satisfied with my basic sewing machine that only had 2 types of seams, straight and zig zag, but as I was learning and loosening up a little more in the sewing, I realized that the overlock machine was necessary, but I did not have the money to buy it, so I started little by little to save money.

Cuando comencé en esta aventura de la costura y del tejido, me bastaba con mi maquina de coser básica que solo traía 2 tipos de costuras, recta y en zig zag, pero a medida que fui aprendiendo y soltándome un poco más en la costura, me di cuenta que era necesaria la maquina overlock, pero no tenía el dinero para comprarla, así que comencé poco a poco a guardar dinero.

When I had enough money, I looked for sewing machines available in the Venezuelan market, specifically in Caracas, because in this case I wanted to personally see the equipment I was going to buy and try it out.

Cuando tuve el dinero suficiente, busque las maquinas de coser disponibles en el mercado venezolano, específicamente en Caracas, porque en este caso quería ver personalmente el equipo que iba a comprar y probarlo.

After weeks of searching, my options were limited to the singer brand, specifically I really liked the heavy duty model. Without giving it any more thought and with the money in hand I went to buy my sewing machine and very happy I returned home ready to use it for the first time.

Después de semanas buscando, mis opciones se limitaron a la marca singer, específicamente me gustaba mucho el modelo heavy duty. Sin darle mas vueltas al tema y con el dinero en mano me fui a comprar mi maquina de coser y muy feliz volví a casa lista para estrenarla.

The heavy duty overlock machine was chosen for its stitch speed of 1,300 stitches per minute, in addition, unlike other machines, the heavy duty sewing machine allows working with 4, 3 or 2 threads, when most conventional machines only allow working with 3 threads, in addition to occupying little space, being light and having a bag for the fabric waste that is cutting its integrated blade.

La maquina overlock heavy duty fue la elegida por la velocidad de sus puntadas de 1.300 puntadas por minuto,además, a diferencia de otras maquinas, la maquina de coser heavy duty permite trabajar con 4, 3 o 2 hilos, cuando la mayoría de las maquinas convencionales permite solo trabajar con 3 hilos, además de ocupar poco espacio, ser ligera y traer una bolsita para los desperdicios de tela que va cortando su cuchilla integrada.

However, my mistake in thinking it would be as easy as coming home to sew all the garments I had waiting to be sewn on the overlock.

Sin embargo, vaya mi error al pensar que sería tan fácil como llegar a casa a coser todas las prendas que tenía esperando por hacerle la costura de la overlock.

The big problem was to thread the machine, at that moment I doubted the purchase I had made, I did not understand how to do it, no matter how hard I tried to follow the drawing that came with the sewing machine and watch many tutorials on threading similar machines, nothing worked.

El gran problema fue enhebrar la maquina, en ese momento dudé de la compra que había realizado, no entendía como hacerlo, por más que intentara seguir el dibujo que traía la máquina de coser y ver muchos tutoriales de enhebrado de maquinas similares, nada funcionaba.

I had done a lot of research before buying the sewing machine, and one of the recommendations was not to remove the colored thread that comes with the machine (the machine comes with 4 different colors to clearly see where the thread should pass) but what was recommended was to cut the upper thread and make a knot to the thread we wanted to change and start sewing, but this thread is not good enough to sew with it, so when I started sewing it broke and I had to do the process from scratch.

Yo había investigado mucho antes de comprar la maquina de coser, y una de las recomendaciones era no sacar el hilo de color que trae la maquina (la maquina trae 4 colores diferentes para poder observar con claridad por donde debe pasar el hilo) sino que lo que se recomendaba era cortar el hilo superior y hacer un nudo al hilo que queríamos cambiar y comenzar a coser, pero este hilo no es lo suficientemente bueno para coser con el, por lo que al comenzar a coser se rompía y me tocó hacer el proceso desde cero.

At this point I felt a bit desperate and worried, because my thought at that moment was: I bought a sewing machine that I don't know how to use, I lost the money. But after a few minutes of anguish I decided to take a break, leave my activity on pause for a few minutes and then start again, with more calm and willingness. My surprise was that everything started to flow better than at the beginning.

En este punto me sentía un poco desesperada y preocupada, porque mi pensamiento en ese momento era: compré una maquina de coser que no se utilizar, perdí el dinero. Pero después de unos minutos de angustia decidí tomarme un respiro, dejar unos minutos mi actividad en pausa y luego comenzar otra vez, con más calma y disposición. Mi sorpresa fue que comenzó a fluir todo mejor que al principio.

Then I had to check the thread tension, this part was much easier because the sewing machine gives you some recommendations on how to tension the threads so that the seam is a certain way, and shows you with images how the final seam would look like.

Luego me tocó revisar la tensión de los hilos, esta parte si fue mucho más fácil porque la maquina de coser te da algunas recomendaciones de como tensar los hilos para que la costura quede de una determinada manera, y te muestra con imágenes como quedaría la costura final.

The last thing I did was to check what the side levers or buttons did, and I discovered that they regulated the width of the stitches.

Lo último que hice fue revisar que hacían las palancas o botones laterales, y descubrí que estos regulaban el ancho de las puntadas.

All that done, I embarked on the adventure of sewing, a little scared, but determined to master my sewing machine and not let it master me, if I had learned to sew on my own why couldn't I learn to use my sophisticated machine on my own?

Hecho todo eso, me embarque en la aventura de coser, con un poco de miedo, pero decidida a dominar mi maquina de coser y no dejar que esta me dominara a mi, ¿si había aprendido a coser por mi cuenta por qué no podría aprender a usar mi sofisticada maquina por mi misma?

Some months have passed since I bought my sewing machine, and every day I learn many more things about it, in some moments I lose my patience and feel a little frustration when I can't get it to do the functions I want, but most of the time I have discovered that it is because I haven't followed the steps correctly because I wanted to finish the projects quickly.

Algunos meses han pasado desde que compre mi maquina de coser, y cada día aprendo muchas más cosas de ella, en algunos momentos pierdo la paciencia y siento un poco de frustración cuando no logro que haga las funciones que quiero, pero en la mayoría de las oportunidades he descubierto que se debe a que no he seguido los pasos correctamente por querer terminar los proyectos de forma rápida.

Today I can say that it is one of the best investments I have made, although the first few days I would have thought otherwise, because the finish of the garments is very good and gives a higher level to the projects I do at home.

Hoy puedo decir que es una de las mejores inversiones que he realizado, a pesar de que los primeros días hubiese pensado lo contrario, pues el acabado de las prendas queda muy bien y le da un nivel superior a los proyectos que hago en casa.

This sewing machine is one of my favorites, the function that I like the most is that as I sew the seams of my sewing projects, it cuts the excess fabric with its blade.

Esta maquina de coser es de mis favoritas, la función que mas me gusta es que a medida que voy cosiendo las uniones de mis proyectos de costura, va cortando el excedente de tela con su cuchilla.

In addition, cleaning is quite easy, it is only a matter of opening the compartment where the threads are threaded and using a small brush that comes with the sewing machine to remove dust, remove the lint of fabric debris that accumulates inside.

Además su limpieza es bastante fácil, solo es cuestión de abrir el compartimiento donde se enhebran los hilos y utilizando un pequeño pincel que trae la maquina de coser para eliminar el polvo, quitar las pelusas de restos de tela que se acumulan en su interior.
