Critical Creating

in Reflectionslast year

There has been a little bit of divided uproar in Finland this week, because of poetry, or lack there of, depending on which side of the fence you sit. A well-known ex-figure skater wrote and published a book of poetry and a critic tore it apart, saying it was a miserable piece of work and wasted all the linguistic possibilities of poetry.

No doubt it will now sell better than expected.

However, I have never been a fan of critics, even though each of us makes judgements on everything we come across, one way or another. But, making a career out of picking to pieces the work of others, but almost never being the one to produce anything themselves, is underhanded. And often, the critics themselves are largely clueless, using the learnings of others to form their "opinion".

There is nothing wrong with having an opinion, but we live in a world that has platforms for every opinion to be hear d and then the media pick up some random story, and amplify it for the drama it gets. This isn't a new technique, it is the way of the mainstream media, where they tend to find the most polarized and ignorant voice from the crowd and then, position them as representative of the group.

Now, they don't even have to report from on location, they can just trawl the social feeds for stupid and amplify the message as if it is relevant, and the voice they have chosen is an authority.

Don't fall for that shit.

We are being manipulated. And as a result, we have become less creative ourselves, less willing to put our own content into the world and more voyeuristic. The centralized social media platforms are filled with more content than they have ever had, but it is coming from an increasingly narrow source of users, concentrating audience attention and driving social segregation through topic and argument, where instead of actually discussing problems in search of a solution, it is about shouting down others and scoring points.

We aren't even using our own content anymore, where we are instead justifying the usage of other people's content as our own, because we are the ones who asked a machine to collect, collate and summarize it for us. The videos created don't show our faces and, they use text to speech to become our voice. Yes, this makes it more convenient, but the underlying truth is, people want to hide.

And they want to hide because they don't want to be judge and criticized, and they don't want to be cancelled for their opinion, by a small group of people who have opposing opinions, even if they only oppose to get attention to make themselves feel relevant, because they have nothing of themselves of value to trade otherwise. They piggyback their relevancy on the work of others - they are attention rent seekers.

In the near future, I believe content creation is going to go through a human revolution, where the mass produced content, AI, ubiquitous and clickbait content will start to be filtered out by user preference. On top of this, we will more heavily move toward supplementary income growth through Web3 interfaces and people will start to demand more human, more personality, more value, more emotion.

But, one of the hurdles to this is that the pool of creators that are both capable and willing to put themselves out there is shrinking, because currently, no matter what the topic or what is said, there will people who disagree strongly and then make it their mission to "destroy" their agitators. We see it on Hive often, don't we? This is not a Hive-specific trait, it is a symptom of the greater world, with Hive being a Petrie dish science experiment, dragging users in from all kinds of backgrounds - often from a position where they are struggling financially, emotionally or socially.

But, because there are incentives on the platform to do so, it is also a place where a lot of different people post in an attempt to gather some attention and capture some value in the form of HIVE. Web3 makes this more commonplace in society and once there is the incentive to make creation great again, it will start to shift.

And perhaps, once more people are creating and consuming from real creators, this rent seeker critics will become less valuable in the marketplace, as people want real, even if it isn't polished or perfect. That means there will be less incentive to be a critic too and through the laws of supply and demand, they too will diminish and perhaps find themselves, having to trade their skills, instead of their vitriol for attention.

I don't feel sorry for the published poet and haven't ready any of the book, but I do think that most people should put a lot more effort into exploring their creative side and if putting it out into the world helps, do it.

Don't give a fuck what anyone says.

These are some excellent points. Looks like just having been on Hive for so long, that we have an extra head-start on critical thinking about critiquing quality content. And, the manipulation is real. People are being exploited, and usually, without most of them even knowing it. Content creation for the sake of having mediocre but prolific content is a bane to the whole of what constitutes what you are promoting.

I do think creatives that have a concept and follow through on it should do it for the self satisfaction... rather than a potential outcome. Not unlike making a post here for the sake of what's in it rather than the motive of the reward possibilities at the end.

Content creation for the sake of having mediocre but prolific content is a bane to the whole of what constitutes what you are promoting.

Absolutely. And then, is it going to be better to have human generated mediocre, or computer generated better? Chat GPT can probably write a better poetry book than this woman, but is it what you want to read?

The journey of creation matters - and it matters for the audience too.

Yes, as a curator for many groups... i have personally seen the positive and negative impacts that ChatGPT and AI art generation. It will be even more challenging in the coming days to discern real content vs. generated content for the exact reason you mention. At the end of the day, AI is just another tool for people to use to augment their own contributions. But we both know there will probably end up being more abusers than ethical and transparent users. Either way, nothing will ever replace the 'human' touch to art and content creation. But, you will almost have to be AI to be able to tell the two apart. hahaha Oh... the IRONy.

But I also think that better checks will be applied where for example, filters will remove it like email apps kill Spam.

There are for more unskilled than skilled. In a gig economy, how many have the skills to perform live?

Most excellent points. My parents played many gigs... and all i could do was carry the heavy equipment and load and unload. Hahaha

I'm nearing the end of "The Fountainhead." I seem to be on an Ayn Rand binge. I have never been able to finish her two supposed masterpieces, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, before now. The Fountainhead has a main character, Toohey, who is a critic. His actions, his words, his opinions, can change the path of history, because folks, even back in the 1930's, were so eager to be told what to think and especially what to place value on. Rand predicted what is happening in government and society today. The books were both written after WWII (I believe) although Fountainhead is set in the thirties. I wonder if these things have been going on since her time, and suspect they have. Our need to be told what to think, feel and do has been ingrained in us for a very long time!

I do feel a little sorry for that poet. Poets have a hard enough time without someone trashing their work. Could it possibly have been that bad? Perhaps it expressed a point of view that the critic does not share?

We have a world controlled by celebrity and our desire to be famous or around those who are. Skill and for betterment have very little to do with the world we have created - it is all about monetizing human nature at whatever cost.

Could it possibly have been that bad?

From what I have heard, yes. However, she was an okay figure skater and probably the best Finland has had. She can't be good at everything :)

I think we can get the positive content from even AI. But the critic would always require a human. Because being negative is an emotion. Positive emotions can be faked by AI. But being negative requires reason and the logic. I suppose we would be seeing that soon with the chatGPT type stuff.

We can get content from AI - but the AI itself doesn't care about the valence.

Don't make the AI angry or depressed.

I am currently working on trying to find my voice on here. I used to find it so easy to write, but it just doesn't come as easy anymore. With my introverted way and now how hyper critical people are anymore, it just makes it that much more difficult to put myself out there sometimes.

It can be hard to get started, but then, does it matter what others think and does it stop you enjoying the process of creation? What happens if we stop people going through the process of creativity because they are scared of criticism or fear it isn't good enough? How do we create a new cure for cancer?

We are being manipulated

Don't give a fuck what anyone says

Instructions unclear, cowering in inaction.

I wonder what the result would be if a critic panned an autobiographical account from members of the UK's Royal Family, or similar. I think the important thing to ask is "was the criticism justified?", or, like a building inspector, they're going to "find something wrong", because that's what they're paid to do?

I like how this sort of stuff is "big news" where you live. Here it is all about the three dozen people who have died on the road in the State year to date.

Or if it was a book of bad poetry from a holocaust survivor, telling of their time in a concentration camp.

I like how this sort of stuff is "big news" where you live.

Finland is a pretty calm place in all.

In breaking news today, man walks dog with new leash.

I find what happened there completely disrespectful. You can't tear another poet's book, even if the book is bad. It's a great shame. How would you feel if someone did the same to your book tomorrow? It's like the girls who recently threw tomato juice at the Mona Lisa. It's disgusting.

If they write for the public, it will get opinions - that is to be expected. But, the critics do this for attention.

While nobody's creativity should be discouraged, the ex-figure skater's book was published and published work is subject to public criticism. Very little in the way of poetry is published annually in Finland and it would best if only the highest quality work was published. I've seen some snippets of the book and weren't good. I've seen other people comment on it similarly.

I think the book was published because the publisher expected to make some money solely due to the fact that the author is very well-known.

I don't think saying that this is a good example of a useless eater of a critic slamming valuable art just to flex his ego or to manipulate the public to some questionable end. I think the critic expressed his honest opinion.

I certainly hope the ex-figure skater will continue writing. Maybe some day she will manage to publish something worthy of wider attention. It is not good to have substandard work published due to non-literary merits. That can be quite discouraging owing to the feedback received.

the ex-figure skater's book was published and published work is subject to public criticism

Everything online is published. It is all open to public criticism. But, how many of the critiques have you read on poetry books? I assume that there are plenty of bad ones out there that still get published.

I think the book was published because the publisher expected to make some money solely due to the fact that the author is very well-known.

This is 90% of the books published in Finland it seems. Perhaps due to its small size and interconnectedness, it is a gossip community that wants to hear about celebrities. I saw this the first time I went to Pori Jazz, where the Finns I was with were "celebrity spotting" more than listening to the music.

I think the critic expressed his honest opinion.

Probably. But, isn't that everyone on the internet, including flat-earthers? :D

It is not good to have substandard work published due to non-literary merits.

It is the risk of the publisher and the writer. Plenty of crap out there gets published. Plenty of crap movies get made too.

Content is largely going downhill.

There's plenty of material online that is not monetized. It's a pity that this celebrity-centric culture scene does not sufficiently reward those who make serious effort and are talented.

I have a higher opinion of that professional critic than you. I don't think writing or understanding poetry is a trivial skill.

It's a pity that this celebrity-centric culture scene does not sufficiently reward those who make serious effort and are talented.

It is the same problem with any advertising model, which is why content is heading the way it is and why I have been talking about where we are today, for years already. It is a scourge on content quality, because quality doesn't matter, clicks do.

I have a higher opinion of that professional critic than you. I don't think writing or understanding poetry is a trivial skill.

Sure - but it is also like wine, isn't it? I am yet to meet a totally undrinkable red ;)

I find the industry of critics quite a terrible one however, because they literally make their money by criticizing the creative work of others. Perhaps they should turn their talents to criticizing the work of scientists instead, as that will lead to some practical improvements. The problem is, in order to criticize the work of a scientist, you have to have a high degree of knowledge and skill in what is not a subjective area. Quite a different kind of critique.

The art critics are a part of the celebrity-centric culture that doesn't reward serious effort and talent you spoke of.

The art critics are a part of the celebrity-centric culture that doesn't reward serious effort and talent you spoke of.

I disagree on that. I see the harsh critique written about the ex-figure skater's work the exact opposite of what you say critics do. I think he did a good job. He could've praised her book to promote it but that's not his job. That's not what his paying audience expects.

Have you ever read another of his critiques? The only reason it is getting any attention is because it is on someone famous.

No. But I'm not into literature or poetry. But doesn't some professional critic usually write a critique of any work that is someone's first work published by a publishing house? It's the publisher that set this thing in motion.

Mr. Taraz , for me, everyone has their own legacy and that is respected. It is a reality, the way where we travel with study, perseverance, and experiences, in short doing the work with structure and being in constant transformation prevailing, it is passion and for me an honor to actively listen, learning more every day, to the golden opportunities, I thank you for the gift...my life...for example.

Have the best day possible with family 🌞🌴

Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you very much indeed Mr. Taraz, the same wish to you 🌴🤗

Leaving aside Hive's speech for a moment I totally agree with you here...

Don't give a shit what anyone else says.

I also agree with the rest of course heh heh!
Let's say that regardless of what others say, if I know I'm doing the right thing, I go on my way.
When I say the right thing, I mean the right thing for me, I'm ready then to shoulder the weight of the consequences if that thing doesn't turn out to be so right; I believe that life is about making decisions, taking responsibility and knowing how to bear the weight.

Beautiful post as always!😉

Every decision we make is the best one we can make in the moment, even if in hindsight it was wrong. Picking each other apart based on these decisions isn't very helpful in many instances, but more importantly, repressing people's creativity before they even start is harmful to humanity. If we repress people from trying, we will never have clean energy or a cure for diseases deemed incurable.

Indeed, let alone freedom of contents, HIVE or other Web3 social medias could give us extra incomes in the future.

Extra incomes and the potential to find audiences that care about us as people, rather than an algorithm for popular.

Criticism is good but criticizing others and ruining their work is not acceptable to me.

There is space for criticism - most critics are not creative.

The Hive version of MAGA is going to be the best, biggest flourishment of content ever seen in the world. The top notch stuff. Absolute fucking amazing. Never seen something so content-heavy and perfect. Very powerful stuff, the most powerful stuff you've ever seen. The Chinese will be crying.

That was fun lol.

I think that people will definitely, once they get over the AI chat bot fad, go into exploratory mode to see who can fill their void of human content that they want to consume. I'm looking forward to those days, I think!

Fuck the critics, they are such a pain and annoying group. Just sell a bunch of click-bait horse shit. I wonder if the review was intentional so that people would buy it and give a small boom to the poetry scene of the Finns. MPGA (poetry version of MAGA!)

My daughter has been cancelled multiple times on Tiktok for being "problematic" (ie ex-friends and some randoms not liking the fact that she exists and is doing well and is not participating in the drama they so very desperately want due to reasons you've written about plenty of times, or their inability to recognise the fact that she's part Asian, she's been told multiple times to stop pretending to be Asian and when called out those people double down to sheer idiocy due to the inability to ever be wrong even when irrefutably proven wrong). It was very stressful for her the first time and I think subsequent times were also somewhat stressful but she started laughing about it because what it did reveal was how pathetic and petty people are.

Even if the poetry sucks at least that person had a go which is more than I can say for a lot of people. Probably the most vocal critics included. Maybe their next attempt at poetry will be better.

Someone's opinions have to move the masses, so at least I try to grind people with similar tastes to my own as they helps.

My partner will simply search something up on TikTok or Instagram. Not even Google search bar anymore, straight to content creators. Look through vacation ideas, read the reax in the comments, everything is so charged now, it is kind of exciting and kind of scary.

Off topic... But I am wondering if you have done a post recently about delegating RC. I remember one that you did some time ago that was helpful to me, but was asked today concerning how much RC you can delegate and still have enough to keep your own account functioning and I didn't know the answer.
