Doing new things is always exciting, and if they have to do with your hobbies, your passions, even more so. In these days when the Qatar 2022 World Cup occupies the global sports agenda, the first time I went to a stadium to watch a game came to my mind.

Hacer cosas nuevas siempre es emocionante, y si tienen que ver con tus aficiones, tus pasiones, aún más. En estos días en que el Mundial de Fútbol Qatar 2022 ocupa la agenda deportiva global, vino a mi mente la primera vez que fui a un estadio para ver un partido.

I've been following this sport since I was a child, but I didn't have the opportunity to see it live and direct until years later, as an adult, so my excitement at being there in front of the court, the players and among the enthusiastic crowd was very intense.

Sigo este deporte desde niña pero no tuve la oportunidad de verlo en vivo y directo sino años después, ya de adulta, así que mi emoción al estar allí frente a la cancha, los jugadores y entre el entusiasta público, fue muy intensa.

This happened in 2007, when for the first time Venezuela hosted the oldest soccer event in the world: the America Cup, which has been held since 1916.

Esto sucedió en 2007, cuando por primera vez Venezuela fue sede del evento futbolístico más antiguo del mundo: la Copa América, que se realiza desde 1916.

In this, the 42nd edition, the tournament was held from June 26 to July 15, 2007. Twelve teams participated and 26 games were played during three weeks in nine Venezuelan cities: Mérida, San Cristóbal, Puerto Ordaz, Maturín, Puerto La Cruz, Maracaibo, Barinas, Barquisimeto and Caracas.

En esta edición, la número 42, el torneo se llevó a cabo del 26 de junio al 15 de julio de 2007. Participaron 12 selecciones y durante tres semanas se jugaron 26 partidos que se repartieron en nueve ciudades de Venezuela: Mérida, San Cristóbal, Puerto Ordaz, Maturín, Puerto La Cruz, Maracaibo, Barinas, Barquisimeto y Caracas.

In Caracas, where I was, only one game was going to be played, the 3rd and 4th place game, something that disappointed me because I would have liked to see several games. As I was working I couldn't travel to the other host cities, anyway I was waiting to buy my ticket to go to that one game in the Venezuelan capital, but in the end I didn't buy it because I was told that I had to work that day... 😭

En Caracas, donde yo estaba, sólo se iba a jugar un partido, el del 3er y 4to puesto, algo que me desilusionó porque hubiese querido ver varios juegos. Como yo trabajaba no podía viajar a las otras ciudades que eran sede, de todos modos estaba pendiente de comprar mi entrada para ir a ese único juego en la capital venezolana, sin embargo al final no la compré porque me dijeron que me tocaba trabajar ese día... 😭

Well, like every soccer fan, I followed every game on television and when the event was in its final stretch and Saturday, July 14, the date of the only game in Caracas, had arrived, I went to work as it was my turn, while I told my colleagues that I would have liked to go to the game, which was to be played at the Olympic Stadium of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) at 5:00 in the afternoon.

Bueno, como toda aficionada al fútbol, seguí cada partido por televisión y cuando ya el evento estaba en su recta final y había llegado el sábado 14 de julio, fecha del único partido en Caracas, me fui a trabajar como me tocaba, mientras les comentaba a mis compañeros que me hubiese gustado ir al partido, el cual se iba a jugar en el Estadio Olímpico de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) a las 5:00 de la tarde.

I was leaving work around 3:00 in the afternoon and one of my co-workers told me: "but girl, go to the stadium and you will surely get tickets there, there must be scalpers". I thought about it for a few minutes and said why not? I'm going to try. I took the subway to Ciudad Universitaria and walked towards the stadium, there were a lot of people and a few meters before the entrance there was someone offering tickets, my eyes shined! I asked him how much it cost and to my surprise it was not expensive. I don't remember exactly how much I paid but the difference with the price of the ticket was not much, it must be that there was not much demand and that is why the price of the scalpers was not high.

Yo salía del trabajo como a las 3:00 de la tarde y uno de mis compañeros me dijo: "pero chama, ve al estadio y allá seguro consigues entradas, debe haber revendedores". Lo pensé por unos minutos y dije ¿por qué no? Lo voy a intentar. Me fui en metro hasta la Ciudad Universitaria y caminé hacia el estadio, había mucha gente y unos metros antes del lugar donde se ingresaba había alguien ofreciendo entradas, ¡mis ojos brillaron!, le pregunté cuánto costaba y para mi sorpresa no era cara. No recuerdo exactamente cuánto pagué pero la diferencia con lo que marcaba el boleto no era mucha, debe ser que no hubo mucha demanda y por eso el precio de los revendedores no fue alto.

When I had it in my hands my heart was like a crazy drum, it wanted to come out, what if it was fake and they wouldn't let me in? Hahaha, I was too anxious to get in, I showed it at the entrance door and everything was fine. Now I was inside and for the first time I was going to enjoy a soccer game! I looked for my place and even though the entrance was one of the cheapest ones, I thought it was well located.

Cuando la tuve en mis manos mi corazón parecía un tambor loco, se me quería salir, ¿y si era falsa y no me dejaban pasar? Jajaja, estaba demasiado ansiosa por entrar, la mostré en la puerta de ingreso y todo bien. Ahora sí, ¡ya estaba adentro y por primera vez iba a disfrutar de un partido de fútbol! Busqué mi lugar y a pesar de que la entrada era de las económicas me pareció que estaba bien ubicado.

The stadium was pretty full and the atmosphere was incredible, super festive. I felt lucky to have gotten that ticket and to be living that incredible moment. It is true that I would have liked to see the Venezuelan national team play, but they were eliminated in the quarterfinals, even so, in this edition they achieved their best performance in an America Cup, something that made the whole country happy.

El estadio estaba bastante lleno y el ambiente era increíble, súper festivo. Me sentí afortunada de haber conseguido aquella entrada y de estar viviendo ese increíble momento. Es verdad que hubiese querido ver jugar a la selección venezolana, pero quedó eliminada en 4tos de final, aún así en esta edición logró su mejor actuación en una Copa América, algo que alegró a todo el país.

As I said at the beginning, the match I attended was the one played to define the 3rd and 4th place of the competition, that is, between the teams that lost in the semifinals, on this occasion: Uruguay - Mexico. I was supporting Uruguay, it is one of the South American teams that I have always followed and also in those years they had a great team, with players like Forlán, Abreu, Lugano, Godin, among others.

Como les dije al inicio, el partido al que asisití fue el que se disputa para definir el 3er y 4to puesto de la competición, es decir entre las selecciones que perdieron en las semifinales, en esta ocasión: Uruguay - México. Yo estaba apoyando a Uruguay, es una de las selecciones suramericanas que siempre he seguido y además en esos años tenían un equipazo, con jugadores como Forlán, Abreu, Lugano, Godín, entre otros.

One of the things that I forgot and made me laugh that day, although I knew it was like that in the stadiums, is the fact that there is no narrator there. To listen to the match report you have to bring your radio and tune in to some station that is broadcasting it or you will be a bit lost hahaha, since the stadium is so big it is difficult to follow the action. Well, I didn't have a radio, so when the plays were close to my side of the stands and I could see the players more closely, I would mentally narrate some plays, or try to 😂, anyway it didn't affect my enjoyment.

Una de las cosas que olvidé y me dio risa ese día, aunque yo sabía que era así en los estadios, es el hecho de que no hay ningún narrador allí. Para escuchar el relato del partido debes llevar tu radio y sintonizar alguna emisora que lo esté transmitiendo o estarás un poco perdida jajaja, ya que al ser la cancha tan grande es difícil seguir la acción. Bueno, yo no tenía una radio, así que cuando las jugadas estaban cerca de mi lado de la tribuna y podía ver a los futbolistas más de cerca, narraba mentalmente algunas jugadas, o lo intentaba 😂, igual eso no afectó mi disfrute.

The match started well for Uruguay, who took the lead with a goal by "Loco" Abreu in the 22nd minute, something that made the stands of the stadium explode, clearly there were more people supporting them, close to me there were many Uruguayans who had traveled to Venezuela to accompany their national team.

El partido comenzó bien para Uruguay, que se adelantó en el marcador con un gol del "Loco" Abreu en el minuto 22, algo que hizo explotar las tribunas del estadio, claramente había más gente apoyándolos, cerca de mí había muchos uruguayos que habían viajado a Venezuela para acompañar a su selección.

The sky-blue team's advantage didn't last long, in the 38th minute, Cuauhtémoc Blanco equalized the match with a penalty kick and in the second half, the Mexicans scored two more goals (Bravo and Guardado) to make the score 3-1 in their favor.

La ventaja de los celestes no duró mucho, en el minuto 38 Cuauhtémoc Blanco igualó el partido cobrando un penalti y ya en el segundo tiempo los mexicanos marcaron dos goles más (Bravo y Guardado) para dejar el marcador a su favor 3-1.

The team I supported lost, but I enjoyed that afternoon too much, when for the first time I found myself in the sport for which I have been most passionate. It is never the same to watch it on television, I always wondered what it would be like to be in the stands, to experience it live and direct, and the truth is that this experience exceeded my expectations.

La selección que apoyaba perdió, pero disfruté demasiado esa tarde en la que por primera vez me encontré con el deporte por el que más pasión he sentido. Nunca es lo mismo verlo por televisión, siempre me preguntaba cómo sería estar en las tribunas, vivirlo en vivo y directo, y la verdad esta experiencia superó mis expectativas.

I cannot end this post without saying that Brazil was the champion of the 2007 America Cup after beating Argentina 3-0. I also have to point out that the now superstar Lionel Messi played for the first time this tournament at the age of 19 and scored a goal against Peru in quarterfinals.

No puedo terminar esta publicación sin decir que Brasil fue el campeón de la Copa América 2007 tras ganarle a Argentina 3 a 0. También tengo que resaltar que la hoy superestrella Lionel Messi jugó por primera vez este torneo con 19 años e hizo un gol ante Perú en 4tos de final.
