Signs of Lemons ahead

Lemon Blossoms

I can’t believe that we have been in our house a whole year! When we moved in last June our lemon tree was literally dropping lemons on the deck because it had far too many. The whole tree was yellow with beautiful lemons. We actually got quite fright at night as we heard a thud and thought we had an intruder which turned out to be the lemons dropping to the wooden deck below at random times throughout the night. Ha!

This year so far we have only had 4 lemons. I think the tree got a type of fungal infection which had delayed our lemon season. BUT now we are seeing signs of life as the tree has burst into blossoms.

It’s such an exciting time to be at home and have the free time to see the changes in our garden, but especially in our fruit trees. Guava season came and went in April and May. This month the birds have been taking full advantage of all the ripe Loquats on our large tree in the back yard. And next we are hoping for an abundance of lemons.

If every bud becomes a lemon then we will soon have more lemons than we know what to do with! Last year I experimented with lemon brownies but after my guava jam journey I think I may try a lemon marmalade. Of course it’s always a good idea to freeze the lemon juice and zest. It makes it so easy to have available when needed.

What other lemon ideas should I be thinking about before our lemons arrive? I’m trying to avoid baking because whatever I bake I eat! So alternatives to baking would be awesome!!!

I’ll report back in a little while once the lemons appear. It’s all so exciting 🌼

Believe me, this is the first time I saw these lemon flowers 🥺 so beautiful... Thanks for sharing this @zo3d

I am impressed, I have never seen pink lemon blossoms before, I have always seen them white. I have a lemon tree, which got mites on it and that has prevented it from loading on a regular basis. Yesterday I commented to @kennyroy that my husband read somewhere, to dilute a teaspoon of baking soda per liter of water, and with that solution spray twice a week to the lemon tree, to remove these pests. I will start this week and then report back on how this alternative worked out for me. Greetings.

Oh yes please let me know how it goes? You can see the blackish fungus on some of the leaves and I think that is what has delayed the budding this year. I’m keen to know if the bicarbonate and water works though! That’s an easy fix.

I even bought biological bio-controllers, because as I am raising melipona bees I can't use anything toxic, and they helped me to control leafminers in mandarins, but they haven't had any effect on the lemon yet. I will let you know when I have results. I think I'll even make a post about it.

Fellow South African! Glad to see your lemon tree doing good. Mine is already heavy with fruit. It carries throughout the year. I am very lucky.

If you like salads, consider making Yuzu kosho. It is a kind of fermented lemon rind/zest and chili/pepper and garlic condiment. You can add a teaspoon or so to olive oil to make an awesome salad dressing. Google can assist you with a recipe, as I think there are various ways of making it. But it is really awesome! (Even better if you have some homegrown peppers!) I hope this helps!

Hi!! Oh great! I’ll look it up and give it a try. Yeah our tree seems to be seasonal but that’s ok. Thanks for the tip!

No problem! Let me know if you give it a try how it turned out. Happy cooking!

OMG these are some pretty lemon blossoms~!

Aaah! Thank you!

Funny to read this as I just came in with hundreds of lemosn and limes --- now to figure out what to do with them all!

Ha! Hopefully my tree will catch up too. It’s been a strange winter.
