Why do we buy so much stuff?

I am not much of a shopper. I don't like shopping, and if I need to go to town or to the mall to buy groceries I usually have a shopping list to keep me on track.

I also make sure to have a good breakfast before I go into the shop as this prevents me from buying everything that I see just because I am hungry.

Last week Saturday my husband and I went to have breakfast before doing our monthly grocery shopping. While we were sitting in the restaurant I was checking out the people walking past. I love watching people because they really intrigue me, but this time it was not the people who intrigued me, but their trolleys.

People walked past pushing trolleys full of stuff. Not only food, but things like toys and pillows and electronic equipment and and and! Mountains of bags with who knows what!

Why do we accumulate so much stuff?

Perhaps people think that worldly goods bring fulfillment and pleasure. I have long since learned that worldly goods doesn't mean much. The only thing that I MIGHT spend money on are books.

Books give me so much pleasure, and I must confess that it is very difficult for me to walk past a book shop and NOT buy a book. Books make me happy and even if I don't have much time for reading, I just like the thought of owning a book. Books make me feel rich.

If we use worldly goods to make us happy, perhaps it's time to do some deep soul-searching to see what we are actually looking for.

Perhaps we are still searching for the meaning of life, and with a little bit of searching we might find that we already have what we are searching for.

If you really want to spend money, material things won't satisfy you. Start handing out money to people who really needs it and eventually you will be fulfilled with the good that you do for others.

Over the years I have learnt to downsize, I was guilty of buying far far too much lol yes I am with you on books, can you really have too many books 🤣

@tengolotodo It's better to have a book with no time to read it, than to have the time but no book to read!

oh so true, I love those words.

Just like you I cannot resist buying a book, but am currently busy throwing out stuff that I'm not using. It's great as I have much more cupboard space and am discovering stuff I've been searching for!

Hi @lizelle hope you good? Now you have space for more stuff!

So much stuff? I often cannot even afford the basic things in real life, I buy only the necessary things. I live with multiple disabilities, nowadays under the local minimum wage, so do not worry. I do not buy so much stuff. Only the necessary.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.
